Just got someone on census with the first name Obed,(Obediah)has anyone ever heard of it or any idea of meaning.I can't find it in my names book. Angie

Came up with this on internet. Meaning and origin of Obediah Gender: Male Ethnic Origin: Hebrew Meaning: Serves God.

Obediah Hawkswill is a character in the Sharpe Series of books by Bernard Cornwell. I have also seen it many times in census returns, GRO indexes and Parish records

There's a registrar called Obed. John Gibbons in Cirencester who registed various of my rellies' bs and ds in the 1860s/70s. I imagine he couldn't be fagged to write out Obediah all the time. nell

Obed is also in the Old Testament. He was the son of Boaz and Ruth and the Grandfather of King David. Liz

Yes it's right Joanne and he lived untill he was 80. Looked at the indexes and there are a few with that name.
