"The Ladies' Association for the Care of Friendless Girls
The Ladies' Association for the Care of Friendless Girls (LA) was founded in 1883 under the auspices of the Church of England, at the initiative of the women's campaigner Ellice Hopkins. The LA's formally declared object was 'to prevent the degradation of women and children', in other words to prevent girls and women from falling into prostitution because of their social, economic or family or other circumstances. The LA operated as a confederation of locally run Associations, which by 1885 numbered 106. " ------
someone must have thought Kate was in "moral danger"
There is an article on a Home for Friendless Girls in Hull.......... it aimed to receive and train friendless girls, and to provide them with outfits and situations. In 1892, there were 11 beds and 4 girls in the house. The one in Carlilse would ahve been similar

St Peter's Orphanage/School for Roman Catholic Boys, Gainford, County Durham
"St Peter's Orphanage for Roman Catholic Boys was established in 1900 at Main Road, Gainford. The purpose-built premises could accommodate 300 boys, aged from 2 to 10 years at their date of admission. The home was run by the Sisters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul.
On 30th August, 1901, St Peter's was accredited for use as a Certified School, allowing it to receive boys boarded out by the workhouse authorities, who paid 6s. a week for each child they placed. "
--------
They were presumably sent there for the same reason that one daughter was sent to the home for friendless girls and the other to her aunt and uncle ........ she couldn't handle take care of them
You can find photos of it by googling St Peter's orphanage durham england

Hi Rootgatherer,
A really good idea, good detective work here! I haven't found all of the siblings details yet (for Isaac), only know of 1 death before 1911 so far. I will work on finding out who the 6 living are.
Yes interesting that Charlotte has only 1 child with her. I found 3 other children at St Peter's boarding school/orphage? in Durham, 3 brothers aged 11-16, which is strange. Her daughter Kate is in a home for "friendless girls", whatever that means (Durran Hill, Carlisle). I can only guess why they have been sent there, perhaps as paupers?

This is Isaac's mother in 1911. Although she's widowed she states she had 10 children, 6 are living and 4 have die. You may be able to work out from that if Isaac is still living?
The transcript is wrong, the household is only Charlotte, Cyril and Catherine. (Incidentally Charlotte claims she had 7 children, 5 living and 2 had died, so where are the other 4?)

An interesting thought...I did wonder that after his wife died he just abandoned the family? He was with her on 1901 census, then lost her in 1903 with daughter a couple months before that, and possibly a new baby...
My grandfather (his son) was found housebreaking - possibly starving at 10 years old, and sent away, 5 years later, no-one came to collect him, so he joined merchant navy. So it is possible that Isaac emigrated to get away from it all? I will look up those passenger lists and have another look at the brampton death, do they get ages wrong on death certificates? again, my thanks for the help...he must have been somewhere!! My grandfather rarely spoke of him, if ever, and never told us about his own misfortunes... Deborah

Wow! That was speedy!! Thank you so much!
I did see the 1926 death of Isaac Davidson, and it was the only fit age wise, but when I found it on this website http://www.carlisleshistory.co.uk/page6.htm, it lists this Isaac as buried with wife Christian (55/10 indicates the grave and place in the cemetery) and if you look there you will find wife and daughter buried there, so I don't think it is him?
Re Agnes Notman, I found their marriage cert. and her father is Michael Norman, not George, (there were 2 Agnes born in the same place & very similar ages..
I am still mystified as to where Isaac was in 1911, with all family split up, so any help with this too would be a big relief. And thank you for the work so far, you lot are brilliant!!! Deborah
