First port of call for records - is to try Family search which is free but If you are doing any amount of research in Scotland then I would suggest you buy credits for SP - £7 will buy 30 credits. 1 credit will bring you a list of results, up to 25 a page and the 5 credits will allow you to look at the details. 5 credits will also allow you to look at originals of census, which are only available as transcripts elsewhere. There is a death on SP for Isabel Horsburgh, 1860 in Ormiston but no maiden name is given:

The death entry should give her parents but if it is the correct Isabel, it doesn't look as if the informant knew her mother's name.

So John did die between 1841 and 1851, even if we can't find a record of it.

From Greyghost's list of deaths above, the Dirleton one looks most likely,(if any of them are John's) given that they were in East Lothian in 1841 and 1851 (reposting again here):

Pauline - am not finding the Ancestry tree you refer to, but have found one that shows
Bella Dods b 12th August 1784 in Bowden, Roxburgh, d/o Thomas Dods and Janet Boa. Source Scottish Church records. SP can be manipulated to find the record without using credits.
There is nil else about Thomas but the parents of Janet Boa (bap 1752 Lilliesleaf, Roxburgh) are given as Patrick Boa (bap 1706 Minto, Roxburgh s/o Thomas Boa and Mary Cunningham) and Margaret Duncan m 1731 Bowden
