I think that it is possible that Mary was married before as otherwise Richard would be born 2 years out of wedlock. Could John have been married before, another possibility. |

Yes there are three baptisms for a Richard Vanstone, one in Winkleigh, one in Monk Okehampton and one in West Putford. I do not think that any of these three is the correct one. |

Vanstones have been all over Devon for a long time although it is suggested that they originated in Warbstow, Cornwall( see Vanstone Index online) |

This is the problem. I was informed that Richard had a brother John and a Sister Sarah and that his parents were John Vanstone and Mary Hodder but I cannot find any proof for it. I was hoping that someone might be connected to this Richard Vanstone- it seems strange that I appear to be the only one. |

Both Sarah and John's baptisms are the correct ones. |

Richard Vanstone did die in 1890. I have the death certificate. He died at 5 Central Street, Plymouth and his son William was present at the death. |

james born in 1801 could not be john and mary's child she would have been too young if she was born in 1791 only 10 yrs old or her date of birth is wrong |

If that's the correct family on the 1851 census that PricklyHolly posted then a tree on Ancestry says that the parents are Richard Vanstone & Eliza Stevens. |

A tree on Ancestry says that John Vanstone & Mary Hodder were married 1810 but had children James born 1801 and Mary born 1809. |
