This is a web site for the Connaught Ranges. It might be worth contacting them to see if they have any records from the era from the mid-1850s through to about 1880.

I am confusing myself Margaret Burke was my g/ grandmother and it is her certs I have. The details you have for the1901 census are correct .Know this as my grandmother was still in contact with them in 1940s. She died in 1949 when I was 4. I did find what could be 2 sisters for Margaret born I India in 1866 and 1868 but as there was several families called Burke living in India at that time not sure especially now I have seen what could be a second marriage for Mary, would help if I could find Mary Burke's maiden name but not on either the birth and marriage certs I have. Thanks Michaelena

I am confused ................. not an unusual state :-)
In you OP, you say ...............
trying to trace my G/GRANDFATHER who was a Pt in 88th Reg.,6 Rangers in India in 1860's. His wife was named Mary and they had a daughter Margaret in 1862 while stationed in Shajehampore
Then in your second post, you say ................
I have a copy of MARGARET's birth cert and her marriage certificate [both events took place in India] also know that SHE and her husband died in 1893 in Manchester, the same year my G/GrRANDMOTHER was born she and her sister Millicent went to live with the Mulryan family in Manchester
was your great grandmother the daughter of Margaret Burke and her husband??
Was Margaret's husband Arthur Moor(e)?
Are we therefore looking for Margaret's Father?
If so, that means we are looking for your 3 x gr grandfather?
Is that correct?

well, if you have their marriage certificate .............. what is the name of Michael Burke's father, and his occupation?
If you know they both died in 1893 in Manchester, then most of the information found for you is wrong, as the deaths found by AustinQ and others are wrong, as those men died in India and much earlier.
Do you have the death certificates??? The name of the informant is often very helpful.

I did state he was listed as unmarried, but that it was still a possibility. -------------------------------------------------------------------------
If above (1901 census) is the correct family, and Mary did remarry, then this is a possible death for Michael:
British India Office Ecclesiastical Returns - Deaths & Burials Transcription
name(s) Michael Burke (Private H.M. 88) Birth year 1829 Death date 31 Aug 1864 Age 35Y 7M Burial date 31 Aug 1864 Place Lucknow Presidency Bengal Archive Reference N-1-110 Page 192 -----------------------------------------------
Listed again- slightly different year of birth, but same man:
name(s) Michael Burke (Private H M 88th regiment) Birth year 1826 Death date 31 Aug 1864 Age 38 Burial date 01 Sep 1864 Place Cawnpore Presidency Bengal Archive Reference N-1-109 Page 224

I looked at the actual image for Michael Burke age 20, as posted by AustinQ
It states that he is Unmarried.
I would put my vote toward the first Michael Burke, age 34, as a possible, as the image does say Married.
There is always of course a possibility that Michael age 20 married after the census before leaving England.

The Wikipedia page quoted from by Sylvia also says that the Connaught Rangers "recruited mainly in the province of Connacht"
Looking at Connacht, on Wikipedia, it says it covers Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon, & Leitrim - doesn't help much to narrow down a search for Michael!
This will be the Michael Burke in Colchester, as per the record posted by MC - it doesn't specify where in Ireland he was born, but does give his age. It also says he's married:
Michael Burke
in the 1861 England Census Name: Michael Burke Age: 27 Estimated birth year: 1834 Where born: Ireland Civil Parish: Colchester St Botolph County/Island: Essex Country: England Street address: Registration district: Colchester Sub-registration district: Colchester First Ward ED, institution, or vessel: Colchester Infantry Barracks Household schedule number: 1 Piece: 1097 Folio: 160 Page Number: 17

British India Office Ecclesiastical Returns- Births & Baptisms Transcription

On the image, Michael Burke is a PT 88th Regt C Rangers (not 6 Rangers) so that would indeed be the Connaughts.

Burke could be an Irish name
Googling "88th Regiment 6 Ranges" provides all kinds of information .............. indicating that it was indeed an Irish Regiment
from Wikipedia ...........
History
The regiment was raised on 25 September 1793 from the men of Connaught by John Thomas de Burgh, 13th Earl of Clanricard.
The 88th were deployed to India in response to the Indian Mutiny in July 1857 in four detachments. It arrived in Calcutta in November. The Connaught Rangers served in India until 1870.
Soooooooooooooo ...................
it looks as though you should be looking for Irish records.
