Find Ancestors

Help! I'm trying to find out more information about my 4 x grandfather Zebedee Black born 1800? Lincolnshire
His parents are Mary Black and Thomas Pocklington, so records state but I cannot find any other information relating to them not even a marriage...

Zebedee has his mother's surname which makes it look as though his parents weren't married

Was that normal back then? Why wouldn't they have been married...I'd love to know more

Possible reasons

parents minors with no parental consent

father already married to someone else

mother already married to someone else

they just didn't want to marry

Unmarried mother's aren't a recent invention, what's unusual is the father's name has been listed

Ok, so do you know what possible reason fathers name was listed despite not being married...would the father have to be present at the time to include his name?
I've looked for a later marriage and can't find one...
I've searched for both Thomas and Mary, birth death, parents etc and I'm stuck!

Thank you both for your information...I have Zebedees death info, I'm looking to find out more about his parents to go one step back... Thomas Pocklington and Mary Black

hard to find not knowing when they were born or where do you know if they had any more children i cant find a marriage for them

A distant family member has them in his tree as 1780 born, but I'm not sure its correct..
Has for any other children I don't think so...I think I need to find other records but it's so difficult

this is the only thomas i can find that could be there are others but born before that

Ooooooh interesting.....Sutterton is where the black family in later years have been found...
Not sure about the middle name though.....it wasn't on Zebedee baptism info just a first name of Thomas?
I'm told that Zebedee ,the name, means Gift Of God, and Zebedee later went on to have 2 sons James and John...no Thomas....not even in later years...I know repeating of names can be quite common so I'm thinking maybe Z didn't have contact with his dad?
Also I'm thinking quite religious....? Hence the names....

If Thomas & Mary weren't married, a Bastardy Order may have been issued against Thomas and this may be why he is named in the baptism. Have you seen the original or just a transcription?

To be honest I haven't seen either...my 3rd? Cousin has the details...basic ones...in his tree

I've just found a 'Mary' Black 1776 Lincolnshire on the 'bastardy' list...could that be Zebs mum?

I think I need to swat up....'bastardy' orders would be placed on fathers of unmarried mothers?
