Hi, having problems finding anything. My grandfather was Francis Hewitson born I believe in Scotland, He was also called Thomas Black before he changed his name. He was brought up as Thomas Black but then for some reason found out his name was Francis Hewitson. He was in the merchant navy. He lived in Bradford west Yorkshire. Can anyone help please.

Do you have his marriage certificate? If so, who did he name as his father?

If you don't have it then that would be a starting point.

If the Glasgow birth is correct father is Francis Hewitson and mother Margaret Wallace.

And from their marriage his father was Francis also.

No Blacks evident

Hi, thank you all for helping. My grandad did marry Doris Harris,I only ever knew her surname till now. He also married again to my step grandma. Hi I got my grandparents marriage certificate today.still none the wiser!. My grandad is Thomas Black formerly known as Francis Hewitson, His father is Frank Black otherwise Francis Hewitson. He was listed as deceased on my grandads marriage certificate. My grandad was born in 1904 and married in 1939. It is confusing as he was known as Hewitson when he died in 1967.

Julie do you know if your grandad had any siblings?

If he was brought up with the name Thomas Black, then found out he had another name, then have you considered the possibility that he was adopted?
or maybe
He was illegitimate and was brought up by his mother's parents, then maybe his father either found out about him, or decided to acknowledge him and so was able to take his name?

Just a couple of ideas.

My man used to talk about an aunt Annie so I looked her up she was born 14 years after him and was called black.I found her in the marriages, as I knew her married name.He was still in the Navy when my man was growing up.On his marriage certificate it says he was an able seaman, mercantile marine.I thought about adoption.Will keep on digging.

At a guess, this would be his parents' marriage:

No sign of that Francis having died before 1939 - at least not in Scotland, with the name Hewitson.

Death of the mother of the Francis b 1906. So she obviously was only married the once.

Did Thomas / Francis give an occupation for his deceased father on the marriage certificate please?

AG - I downloaded the marriage certificate and have pm'd it along with a 1906 birth for Francis Hewitson

If 1904 is correct birth on his marriage certificate then we are looking on SP at the wrong Francis and Francis
