This is for a work colleague, and info is a bit sparse, but this is what she knows: Walter was born c 1889, in Lincolnshire. Or was he? on the 1901 census he is down as being born in Nettleton, Lincs, aged 12 years son of Fred and Charlotte Wackett. on the 1901 census he is aged 22, single, but place of birth is given as Navan, Ireland, and he is registered as a nephew. I have found his war records from WW1 and he was discharged towards the end of the war having lost an eye, but on the Military sheet, Fed is back down as father??? I have found other Wackett's on Ancestry who were born in Navan, so maybe there are links, but checking what access I have to irish records have not yet found anything new. My colleagues late mother said he was always treated a little differently, and there is speculation he may not have been Charlotte and Fred's son, but a cousin? |

That's interesting, Andrew, and I note the difference in spelling. As you can see on Glitter's post, they were down as Wickett, but I have not done that variant of spelling as you give. Thank you. |

Thanks GB, I had seen this and wondered but Joanne (the work colleague) didn't seem so convinced I will ask again. Thank you. |

The Walter Wackett shown on 1891 is still with his parents in 1901 but shown as a policeman on 1911 |

G-B, when I told her about the policeman and his family, she checked other records that shad and asked other family members about the various names, but no one has any family info really, but she said there were no links to Scunthorpe. I won't see her again now until Tuesday, but will ask her again. |

Jacqueline, my friend Jo Battersby, was born in Lincolnshire to Jack Earley and Phyllis Cawley; Phyllis was the daughter of Fred Cawley and Clara Wackett. Clara was the daughter of Fred and Charlotte Wackett, who are the ? parents or cousins of the said Walter. Jo has lived in Lancashire for many years so does not have access to much info currently, hence she has asked me to try and find any information. The elderly aunts and her mother have been dead for years so cannot ask them anymore. All she says is that he seemed to be treated "differently" by family members, according to her mum's account and that of others (Jo was born in 1965 so never actually knew Walter, he died the following year) and not in a nice way, as though there was something odd about him?. A thought I have put to her, is that was there ever any question about his sexual orientation? Everyone she knows has wondered if he was the illegitimate son of an unmarried Wackett, and taken in by Fred and Charlotte , but people at those times were also rather nasty if someone was gay. But of course, this doe not explain the discrepancies on the census, that he was Fred and Charlotte's son born in Lincolnshire one minute, and a nephew from Ireland the next!!!! Sadly I doubt if we will ever know. Like so many mysteries, if only family had questioned before it was too late and sunk in the memory of time? |
