Thank you very much, this is the person I have been searching for, but he was known as Arthur by the family. All the details which you have given me, i.e. marriage details confirm it is the right person.
I am still trying to trace his maternal grandparents - Thomas Stacey was Jane Eveline's father but we have no idea of the name of her mother. A Hannah O'Neil (nee Cowan) was married in 1869 to a Thomas Stacey, a year before Jane Eveline was born, but I cannot find anything that proves that Hannah is indeed her mother, as there is no trace of Jane Eveline until her marriage to William French in Agra in 5/03/1894. The story is that the wife of Thomas was born in India.
Regards

As the MOTHER of Jane Eveline Stacey was born in India, possibly in an orphanage, I don't think that this person (Hannah) could be the person we are looking for. Therefore, I don't think the wife of Thomas Stacey could have been born in Scotland. From the British Army Records there are two listed Thomas Staceys, both have the same soldier number 333, but one is a Private and the other a Farrier Major. The Thomas listed as a "Private" was born in the parish of Streatham, birth date 1828 which seems to fit, but I cannot find a trace of it.
The daughter of Jane Eveline French (Frances Beryl French - born 11/2/1900) can remember spending holidays at her grandmother's bungalow. Regards, Jean

I have been searching through some old papers and find that Thomas Stacey was partly Welsh and that his wife was brought up in an orphanage and looked after by nuns., this I feel must be in India, In view of the new information which I have found do you think that the Welsh Records would be worth trying and then if nothing is found, looking to the Scottish Records because Thomas and Hannah's marriage does appear to fit the date of Jane Evelyn Stacey's birth. The article written by Jane Eveline's daughter states that she (Jane E) was born in India
I would appreciate if you would advise me please how to contact the Scottish and also the Welsh Departments?

Is this co-incidental - ? Hannah's first marriage? It really will be worth you getting a few credits for Scotland's People.

This is the only Hugh Cowan I can find in India on FMP - no idea if correct. He would be 50 by the time Hannah was born but not impossible of course.
He is applying for a gratuity having been an Infantry Private he says and been invalided for fits after serving 4 years in Bengal. Awarded 1 guinea!

PM Received - please keep to your thread Jean so all helpers can see your post.
This is the family concerned. The place is Tundla where W. French was born. I now have all the relevant information to the present day generation. However, the missing vital piece of information is the Christian name of Jane Evelyn's mother and her maiden name. This seems very elusive!! At present I am wondering if Thomas Stacey's wife - nee Cowan might be a lead.
---------------------------- If the above Army records are showing the correct Thomas then his daughter Caroline Emma who was baptised in 1865 has a mother called Catherine.
There is a death on FMP for a Catherine Stacey in 1868 b 1830. The original says that she was wife of Sergeant Stacey 21st Hussars

Greetings Mike, and thanks for your quick response. Despite the variation of the spelling of the surname I think it is worthwhile taking the connection a step further. Do you have any further information on the Stacy Family and also Jane's mother's Christian and maiden names? And I would really like to know is this a photo of Jane.?

Welcome to the Boards, Jean
In order to find out whether a member of GR has Jane Eveline Stacey in their tree, you have to search ..........
it is extremely unlikely that a member who does have real life information on her will see your post.
Go to Search in the top right
Click on it
then click on Search All Member Trees
Enter Jane's name in the search field
If her name does show as being in someone's tree .............. click on the member's name to send them a pm (private message) through the GR system
Please do NOT just choose the automated "open your tree" option ........................
write a message in the message box that gives the tree owner some indication as to why you are contacting them, and how you are connected to Jane Eveline
Click Submit to send the message
Then keep an eye on your Sent messages regarding a reply
Click on Messages at the top
then click on Sent Messages
If a green envelope is showing to the left of the contact's name, the message has not been opened
If there is no envelope showing, the message has been opened
Remember though .................. no member can be forced to respond if they do not wish to!
good luck
