You are correct mgnv I have never seen any OPR's. Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I have for many months had to leave my research due to family health problems, not mine thank goodness. If I get chance to eventually re-start I shall inform you of anything useful I discover. Be assured I am grateful for your help which has been very useful and eye-opening. |

Paul - it sounds to me like you've never seen any OPRs (=Old Parish Registers) |

....................... and even then, you will often find that only the father's name will be shown, especially on early records. |

No it does not always show parents, most of witnesses shown on marriage records pre 1837 are the churchwardens but sometimes bridegroom's siblings or bride's siblings shown in which they maybe give you a clue. The only way of finding parents on pre 1837 must be via baptism records in their local parish church will show parents' names. |

Just a thought, but if only witnesses shown on marriage records pre 1837 the only way of finding parents must be via birth records which presumably even pre 1837 still show parents?? |

Thank you Christopher, most helpful and also thanks ChristinaS. In fact all the info has been some help to a 70 yr old with no previous experience of this though I guess I should have picked up on pre and post 1837 information. |

Yes Paul, you're right, the only marriage records pre-1837 are the records written at the parish church. These usually give the name of the parish where the couple presently live, and the names of the witnesses. Nothing more. |

WDP stands for Wakefield Documentation Parish. You need to go to WYAS (West Yorkshire Archive Service), Wakefield to look at the original Parish Registers or microfiches whatsoever you choose. No. 32 means that it refers to Huddersfield Parish Registers and No. 30 means that it is volume 30. Hope it helps you. |

For clarification am I correct in thinking (following the information sent to me above) that marriage records pre 1837 are no help in ascertaining parents of those being married? |

You'll need to look for Joseph's baptism - where and when was he born? |

Thanks for the responses all. As the detail on the presumably church/parish record does NOT give the actual church where the marriage took place what can be done to find further information such as who were Joseph's parents? Elizabeth's parents I know, (by the way father was George SHEPLEY Hampshire according to my info.). |

As its pre 1837 there will be no certificate to order. The only record will be the church /parish register. |
