The same map - and others - is also available at http://www.ph.ucla.edu/epi/snow/1859map/map1859.html. There's another very good searchable map of London in 1862 at http://www(.)motco(.)com/map/81006/ |

Its about the notebooks and researchings of the social reformer and historian Charles Booth. There are maps of the poorest and richest areas of London. He began his research @ 1889 and updated it by tramping the streets of London about 10 years later - often with a police escort. If the area was classed as 'vicious, semi-criminal' it is coloured black on his maps and 'well to do' areas are yellow. I believe it is searchable by street name and there are some indications that it is searchable by names of the peole interviewed - but I haven't had much success yet. The maps are published on line by the London Scoll of Economics - as the web address suggests. Hope this whets some interest. Mmmmm - never thought I'd be interested in an LSE site. Amazing where Genealogy can take you! |
