Where is Mile End?

Hi all I am searching for the birth of my ggrandfather Richard Thorne. On 1881 census it says he was born at Upton Somerset and on marriage certificate Wiveliscombe, Somerset. I have found a Richard Thorne on 1837online.com for the right year 1867 born at Mile End. Spelt without an E though!! Wondered if anyone knows where this is? Thankyou. Sue |

what was the ref for the one you found though??? the reason i ask is sometime youcan find two places named the saem but in different regions you can tell if it is the London Mile End as it will be the number one followed by a letter. |

Hi Sue In Portsmouth Hants there is a large area around the ferry port known as The Mile End if you have any Navy connections this may be of use to you. Tina |

There are five Mile Ends in UK, Shropshire, Essex, Glos, Suffolf and East London |

Oh Dear Im very confused now!! I checked the reference number and if im looking in the right place its volume 1c and page 531 But this means nothing to me. I do know he was born at Upton and with all the changes over the years this could come under Devon. So if Twinkles right could this be him? Thanks for all your help Sue |

Thans Karen It looks like its definately not the right one then. I can only assume he wasn't registered then. Thats the second of my ancesters as I cannot find his wifes birth either!! Sue |

Small tip for you. The volume number relates to an area. This does not change. The number 1c as you now know is for a part of London. For help with any other volume numbers the FreeBmd website is quite useful. Regards. |
