Thank you Malcolm. That helps - York and Ceylon are not mentioned at right time. I wonder if I could glean some info from York castle? It is all part of their history too... They may have details of the regiment in residence at the time. By then he was an officer apparently - Dad told me he used to play in the grounds and once nearly pushed a heavy garden roller through the castle wall --little vandal! Alice |

Sammy, I will try that but it sounds as though they may not play ball. However I have to provide proof of death - so I suppose they should not send me wrong record. Tyhey are also insistant on a letter from next of kin. Apparently they are putting all records on a data base to be completed by end of 2005. i wonder if it would be better to wait?? It says at present it can take 3 months to process - so it my be quicker to wait ( if you see what I mean..) Alice |

Alice, I wonder if you put a few lines in saying these records are only of interest to you if E E stands for Ernest Edward , that little reference check would only take a moment. It's certainly worth a try, it's not like your asking them to trawl through looking for place of birth or addresses etc... Sam |

It is going to cost £30 to get his records. I know my dad spent some time in Ceylon with the army in his early years. I know where my Dad was born and suspect it was in a house in some way rented from the army. I know my Grandad was posted to York and the family lived in York castle for some time - all this in the late 20's early 30's. My Grandfather's name was Ernest Edward Allison - on the medal card it says E.E. Allison. - Not John Smith but still a few of them about I suspect! The package I have just received says they cannot check any details just send number and they will return records. Ihave to get permission from my aunt as she is his next of kin. Unfortunately as his youngest child she can't remember anything! IF ONLY I'D ASKED MY DAD! Any advice on checking the movements of the regiment so I can be more certain I have the correct card and regiment? Alice |

I am trying to get my Grandfather's army records. He lived in Lewisham and I think he was in the West Kent Regiment as I found and downloaded a medal card with his name on. It was for 1914. SEE BELOW |
