Thanks Roy, when my sis gets round to sending me all this info, (I shall keep on the case now I know they exist), I shall have a good look at it myself. Thanks so much for all your ideas - its so great how many minds can solve a problem!

If ESC is next to his name, then could it be his rank eg, engineering second class Roy

MANY MANY THANKS everyone for your efforts in answering my query. I always feel so in awe of the kindness of everyone on here. I think Tony you may be right. If he were a fireman then perhaps the tug Rollcall accompanied the fleet at Jutland to ........well help put out fires! Jack, bless you for the nautical pun!! LOL At least I have more leads now as I had no idea of any of this before sister rang me about 'the box'. I have now told her to bundle up all this stuff and send it to me registered post so I can drool over it. Amazing how people dont seem to value this like us guys. Once again, many thanks for your input and Chris son, sorry I dont think it was the swimming or slimming club after all.

Heather If you are going to carry on trawling you need a fishing boat not a tug!!! Best of luck Jack

I think Essential services Commission is probably right actually if he was seconded. it sounds right. Ann Glos

Thanks ann. The only thing I can find for E S C is essential services commission. Dont know if this has anything to do with him being seconded to the Royal Navy from the Merchant Navy. Or of course, perhaps he belonged to the Eastbourne Swimming or Slimming Club! (Thanks boy). I cant find anything except that armoured tug boat either. Perhaps I will copy the illustration of it to add to the old FT2005.

Heather, i asked my husband but he doesn't know what ESC can mean. i also looked at the miniature sites - you're right that is the only mention of Rollcall i could find. But by looking at the sites you can see it was an armed tug in WW1 and WW11. Don't know if that helps or not. Ann Glos

Bless you son, but I dont think your Great Grandad was of such high position - he was a stoker in the Merchant Navy and seconded as a fireman to the Royal Navy. Nope, Im blowed if I can find anything other than $6 for a miniature of the boat! Will carry on.

Thanks Tony, I did have a quick google, but only a miniature ship came up for sale! Grandfather was a fireman and at Battle of Jutland, so it would have been nice to find something a little more exciting than a site for miniature ship collectors - but I shall carry on trawling. Many thanks.

Well, after assuring me several times over the last year that she has absolutely nowt of interest genealogy wise, my dear older sister whilst searching for some insurance papers has come across a whole big box full of photos, 4 Birth certs, 4 death certs and 2 Marriage Certs (SCREAM). On top of that she has found my father's reference from his school for his first job, plus his RAF record and my Grandfather's Navy papers. She tells me that on these papers it shows my Grandfather as Royal Navy HMS Rollcall. But that there are three letters - apparently E S C next to his name. Assuming this doesnt mean escapee, any military buffs know what it does mean please?
