Hi, Could someone please have a look at the following census return for 1891 and tell me what you think the occupation says??? Charles Colford age 36 born Canada living in the parish of Arthuret in Cumberland. It looks like First Racer to me but not sure...... Kx

LOOKS LIKE FIRST RACER. WHAT WAS HE 10 YEARS PRIOR?

Janice

Janice Report 12 Apr 2005 15:19

Don't think it's 'first' - what you are reading as an 'i' is a bar on the end of the capital F (see Frederick in the list of names) What about 'foot'? Janice

Hi, I haven't got him in 1881, think he may have been in Canada or US then. I do know that he went on to be a Bar Manager in Gatehead in 1901 though. I see what you mean about the 'F' it could certainly be Foot. Do you know what a First or Foot Racer did? Kx

Haven't got a clue! Some kind of athlete or marathon runner?

Carol Report 12 Apr 2005 15:35

Yes I agree with Janice probably foot - Looking at Jane Foster above. Do you think the second word could begin with B - have a look at School Boy above and compare it with some of his cap Rs. Sorry not being much help probably confusing you even more. I thought the bar manager was a bit old LOL. Carol

Found on US 1880 - Charles A Colford born in Canada of Irish parents 1856. Occupation given as 'works in woollen mill'. That may explain 'foot racer' perhaps it's something to do with working the machines. Hope this is of some help. Carol

Thanks Carol, I have just been looking at that myself. I think that's him as there is a message on one of the boards in Ancestry about this man. His GG Grandaughter has posted a message in 1999 and again in 2000 describing Charles as having married Helen Jackson in Longtown England. I sent this lady a message ages ago and have not had a reply to date. The only concern I have is that he is married in 1880, I hope he didn't come over here and leave her in the lurch.....!!!! Do you know of any 'easy' way of maybe getting any info on when he came to England? Also does anyone know how I would get his birth cert/details?? So many questions !! Kx

Karen Don't know of an easy way to get info on his coming to england - not experienced enough! As for birth cert etc why not put a thread on records board for shift tonight and mention Canada in the title. Hopefully someone will reply from over there Carol :)
