Right. I think I have a possible on the 1881 census RG11/Kensington Folio 100 P33 Alice Baker born 1865 Camberwell living in as a servant. Any way, I am going cross eyed and have work in the morning so I will look afresh tomorrow. Many thanks already. For anyone who may have been going to have a quick peek for me, I didn't want you to think I am rude if I don't reply, but I am off to bed.! Claire xx |

Ok. Henry is a carpenter on the marriage cert. Of course I didn't think that name could not be right! (don't make it easy do they)? At the time of her marriage in 1885 she was living at 16 Hill street and was married in St. Saviours in the parish of St Mary Newington. Claire xx |

And sometimes with entries from that year, she may have been indexed as Alice Baker with no initials. Just a possibility. Maybe even her birth wasn't registered.... worse still |

Well I have, but I really can't seem to pin her down. I can't seem to find an Alice living with a Henry as father, but lots of Alices around 16 yrs as servants. I have a couple of possibles but I don't know how I can verify the info without knowing her birth date or place for certain. I will go and have another look though. Something just may jump out at me! :o) Claire xx |

How did you come to the conclusion that her dad was called Henry? Throught the marriage certificate right. His name is not necessarily Henry (it might have been George for example) and he changed it, or she didn't know her fathers first name but she knew one of his names was Henry. What profession does the marriage say for this person? |

Have you tried 1881? |

Well, the 1901 census says Isle of Wight and the 1891 says Camberwell. A likely family on 1871 (but I am not 100% sure it is the right family) has the rest of the family born in Dorset and Alice in Camberwell Her age on the marriage cert is 20, so I am assuming she didn't lie, as she would have said 21 if you get me.....so I looked on 1837 for 1865 and found an Alice Elizabeth born in Lambeth which seemed the most likely, but obviously not. I do appreciate you taking the time to answer my rather garbled messages Steve. :o) Claire xx |

I'm glad you understood what I said (I didn't think I worded it properly). Where did you get the reference for your relative? FreeBMD? 1837online? Ancestry? As you know FreeBMD and Ancestry aren't complete. As place of birth what does it mainly say (if I get conflicting information I take all the census returns I have and count the number of each occurance and the majority wins) |

Sorry, I didn't express myself very well did I. I did supply the fathers name and got a refund, so I am assuming it was because the father's name did not match. :o) Thanks for the reply though. I will certainly pay for a cross reference in future too. :o) Claire xx |

You could of supplied her fathers name.... you have to have this checked so if they don't find the person you're looking for they refund you £3, theres a way of checking you've got the right father. So with possible entries do that. I haven't done it myself, but seems the best thing to do. |

Some very kind people have aready pointed me in the right direction with this person and for that I am very grateful, but I still seem to be going round in circles. I have a subscription to Ancestry and 1837 so I can do the 'donkey work' but I would appreciate it if someone could tell me where to go next. I am looking for my GGG grandmother before her marriage. Unfortunately she has a very common name. Alice Baker in 1901 she was married to Frederick Stevens - RG13/476 Folio 104 P13 in 1891 again, living with her husband and children RG12/404 Folio 172 P11 I have her marriage cert Dec quarter 1885. Her father was Henry, a carpenter. Guinevere kindly gave me a suggested family from 1871 RG10/668 Folio70 P6 I ordered the most likely birth cert based on this info, an Alice Elizabeth Baker born 1865 Lambeth (1d 341) but the father isn't Henry so I guess this is incorrect. I would just like to know when and where she was born as info on the census is conflicting, particularly of her birthplace (Isle of Wight, or Camberwell) So sorry if this is far too much info to take on board. I just need some ideas from some more experienced people. TIA Claire xx |
