William Neilus does seem to be William Rudge - do the two William's birthplaces, ages and occupations match up? They might have been hiding, or maybe just a confused enumerator. In the village where I live now people are often referred to by their maiden, or previous married names (and lots have nicknames or use second christian names) it must be a nightmare for newcomers and I can just imagine the muddle a census enumerator would get into if he had to collect information from them. |

I have had such help since I joined this site, I thought I would be cheeky and ask for help again! As a beginner, I sometimes find some things really cnofusing even when the obvious is staring me in the face! LOL Well here goes, hope you can keep up. Searching for my great great grandparents. My great grandmother's name was Kate Rudge, no problem there. I know her father was William rudge and her mother was called Eva, she died when Kate was 12. That was all the info I had. So I started my search for a marriage between william rudge and an Eva in Birmingham and found a marriage between Willam rudge and Eva Hazeldine Neilus in Dec 1889 in Birmingham. Appears in every respect to be them. So, then I checked the 1891 census and sure enough there they are, now with a 1year old daughter named Kate, so that fits. Also the address of a Public House in Mosely street in Kings Norton - that fits as I was told that Kate was born in a pub in Kings norton. Eva's age at this point is 34. Also living with them is a 'step daughter' clara neilus. Was Eva married before to a Mr Neilus? Can't find any record of a marriage to a Mr Neilus. So not sure whether this is her maiden name and clara illigitimate. Fab! Keeping up? So, now I look at the 1901 census and the rudges have disappeared. BUT Eva Neilus reappears, married to a william neilus, with a daughter kate neilus aged 12, some other children but no sign of Clara. and at a different address. Now, is she married to 2 people at the same time (don't think so - but great family scandal!) or have the whole family moved from the pub and reverted to her maiden name to 'hide' from the officials? Is william Neilus really william Rudge? Or has she left willaim rudge and gone back to willliam neilus, if he ever existed? Her age on 1901 census given as 44, so that is right. Then later that year an Eva Hazeldine Rudge dies aged 48 (so 4 years discrepancy) But it would fit that she died this year as kate was 12. Are you as confused as me? Is there something fishy going on? My mother is interrogating my grandmother as we speak, but I don't think we will get much from her. Why would they be 'hiding'? Thnaks for any help you can give me |
