Jim, Thank you so much for your help and info. This has given me other avenues to look at. It is just so difficult not having another piece of the puzzle to cross reference. Much appreciated. J |

A quick search on 1901 only brought up this. Have not found on Ancestry.Problem is the spelling seems to really be spelt Saunders and there are several Saunders. There are even two on same census page. Alice Sanders 16 born Oxfordshire Cuxham living Dorset Parkstone Cook Domestic |

Justine Ive just checked a cert for a rellie of mine with no father (dated 1908). He is regiestered with her name which i know is her maiden name. Sorry to make your search more difficult but she lived all her life in Liverpool but went to London to have baby, i wouldn't of found cert but for the fact he was the only birth listed within a 10 year period with the correct name. Hope this helps It is difficult as you say to find her and then get definite proof. On the 1901 decoder there is Alice Sanders 16 Oxfordshire born Cuxham Dorset Parkstone Cook Domestic Could be her? She doesn’t show up in Ancestry though. I thought she may have a Frank James living there There is an Alice in Southampton on her own aged 28 who is a dressmaker. I should point out here that dressmaker was sometimes a euphemism for another profession!! Though there are a lot of trades in the street. I have even tried to tie in a Frank/James but no joy. I have tried different spelling of Sanders with no joy Sorry I can’t find but maybe these 2 may be worth investigating I have my ggrandfather’s marriage and his brother’s marriage certs, where no father is mentioned but I have there birth certs which are correct. Mine either forgot his name r didn’t want to put it as he abandoned them in the w/house, I think Good Luck |

Jess, The address on the birth cert for Albert Victor Sanders B: 17/8/1904 was Morley Cottage, Ferndown, Hampreston, Wimborne, Dorset. Alice is listed as a dressmaker. I have looked for this address on the 1901 census and can't find it. I have looked for a Alice Sanders as a dressmaker in this area and still nothing. I know there are lots of other Alice Sanders on the census but I will not know if they are the right one as I have no other family information other then the James Frank Sanders on Albert's marriage certificate. Then again he may have been a brother or even Alice's father is Albert was illigitimate to save embarassment, or Alice may not have been from the Wimborne area. If I can't any further I will have to trawl through the 1901 census at great expense. J |

Have I got this right. He was born in 1904 and married 10 years later in 1914? |

Albert married aged 10??? I would think that he was illegitimate, especially since there is no 'nee' name on his birth cert. It's likely he made up a father, so he didn't feel ''embarrased'' |

Column 5 on a birth certificate asks ' Name, surname and maiden name of Mother' so if only one name is given then this must be the maiden name. Also, if the surname of mother and baby are the same then the father has no involvement insofar as the registrar is concerned and the name of a father will not be shown. Any additional father with the same surname as mother and child given on marriage of the child must be 'made up' or the birth cert would have been incorrect. One way or tother one cert is showing incorrect info and the highest probability is the marriage cert. |

Justine My initial thought is that your relative was illegitimate. If Sanders was his mother's maiden name, it would list her married name too as well as the husband (who would be assumed to be the father unless otherwise stated). The name on the marriage cert might be his dad's, but it might also be made up to save embarrassment. You can check his baptism record to see if a father is named there. It is odd that you can't find his mum on the census though. nell |

I recently requested my grandfathers birth Cert. Albert Victor Sanders was born in 1904 in Ferndown in Dorset. The name of his father & his occupation are not listed. The name of mother is Alice Sanders and occupation dresmaker. There is no mention of a maiden name on the certificate, unless Sanders was her maiden name. Albert got married in London in 1939 and on his marriage certificate it lists his fathers as James Frank Sanders a deceased Hotel Porter. I have looked on the 1901 census for both parents and the address where Albert was born - Nothing. I have looked for marriages around the date of birth nothing. What explanation is there and where do I look next - any suggestions would be gratefully recieved. many thanks J |
