<goes red with embarrassment> <bangs head on desk> Doh! I know now what I was doing wrong! I can't believe I was so stupid! Problem solved. In the spirit of making myself look like a complete idiot I'll confess. The Master Genealogist presents a number of pages during the process of defining exactly what's going to appear in the Gedcom file. I was leaving these at their default settings - Unfortunately one of the pages I was just flicking past is kind of important. The one in question is where you define exactly WHICH people in the tree are going to be exported - I was only exporting one - myself! All I had to do is select the 'All people' option, rather than the 'Current Focus Person' option. Feel free to laugh at me in derison :) |

Thanks Laird I took your advice yesterday but nothing worked Thanks Grampa Jim I have alread sent my Genes tree to a PAF file as instructed and named it with my surname but when I try to inport it I go to the browse buuton and find Imy my PAF file then click on it and it appears in the box I then press import button and it seems to be loading then an error message comes up. I have tried typing in my name and PAF 5 but no luck. I wonder is there anything else I can do? Thanks Margaret |

When you click on the Export Icon you get another window with various choices. The bottom one is Other Gedcom 5.5 You need to click on the button by it. When you do that it highlights the box below it. Click on the down arrow at the side of the box and you get a drop down list of 4 choices. Click on ansi. |

I had a hiccup last time I uploaded a Gedcom from PAF. I will look it up and see if I can remember where I went wrong. |

Margaret - have you followed the instructions TO THE LETTER ? The file on GenesR must be empty except for yourself - and spelling, dates etc must EXACTLY agree with what you have specified on the incoming file. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Added By Laird Davison on 01/05/2005 17:37:29 | Update Message | Delete Message Its always been flakey - the import/export facility page. But often its being churlish becos it cant 'match' your name and details on GenesR with any entry on the incoming file. Last time I answered this query for someone, they swore blind that everything matched - then came back 2 days later to say they had a middle name in the incoming file ! It really does have to match 1 for 1 with name, dob year, pob spelling etc. HONEST ! |

Hi Margaret, Thanks for the response. I've indeed sent them an e-mail - pretty much the same as the post above. It's just with it being a bank holiday I doubted I would get a response for a while and was hoping someone on here might have had the same problem (and hopefully have found a solution:) ). Regards, Don. |

Hi, I'm hoping that someone can help me with a problem I'm having importing my GEDCOM file into Genes Reunited. The program I use to store the details of my family tree is The Master Genealogist (Gold UK Edition, v5.15.000). It allows me to export my tree as a GEDCOM file. I've done this, ensured that it is in Gedcom 5.5 format, with Ansi character set, but then Genes Reunited doesn't import the file (although it claims to have done so). I get the 'Load Gedcom File to Create a Tree' page, but when I press the 'Build Your Tree' button I am simply taken to the 'Your Family Tree' page where my name is the only entry. There is no sign of the rest of my tree, and the 'The Ancestors of Donald Nairn' page is blank. I have made sure that my name and D.O.B. is the same in the Gedcom and in Genes Reunited. Also I have checked that my tree in Genes Reunited is empty appart from my name as owner of the tree. I'm hoping that someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong, or if there is a known incompatibility between Genes Reunited and Gedcoms generated by The Master Genealogist. Sorry abour the length of this post and thanks in advance for any help, Donald Nairn |
