My grt grandfather -John Batchelor- birth in 1847 isnt registered. I have him on the 1881 census only aged 33 & have his death cert of Aug 1884 died aged 37 ,so know he was born between March & August 1847. No birth found for either online or at the London Records Ofiice. The census states was born Holloway .I did take a chance with one cert born Lambeth but it wasnt him as dads name was Charles on his marriage cert of 1870. Have been to the LMA & checked church records for Holloway.(with the help of the staff there so nothing missed),. He wasnt listed on any of the 4 churches in the district. So where do I go from here. Know his dad was Charles but cant go back any further. Jess Bowbag Bobbin has already checked census,s for him with No result. Shirley

Just asking that are you sure that it is Holloway in London as there is one in Derbyshire? Pippa

Hi Pippa. Yes the census states Holloway Middlesex which is what Holloway came under then. The reg district is Islington John married Esther in Bethnal Green Middlesex in 1870. It seems his birth record is one that slipped the registration net. Have tried frebmd with batchelor births for Islington around the 1840's to 1860 but there are many to pick from. was hoping to maybe find a sibling but it would be a costly exercise.plus if he wasnt reg. chances are his parents didnt register siblings either. A good possibility for 1871 John Backler 1847 Stepney, Middlesex, England Head Stepney London Esther Backler 1851 Stepney, Middlesex, England Wife Stepney London Unnamed Backler Infant 1871 Stepney, Middlesex, England Son Stepney London 2 Bale street The image does say Backler, but that could be someone's interpetation of Batchelor Do you have John jnrs birth cert by any chance? The addresses should be the same, unless they moved within the last month. What are the addresses on the marriage cert? Sam

Wow Sammy That looks a strong possibilty. thank you so much I have a John George on the 1881 born Stepney & found his birth ref. Dec 1870 Stepney. havent applied for his birth cert tho . On the 1881 John senior is listed as born Holloway & esther Bethnal green & I have her cert of 1852 which confirms this. The address on the wedding cert are him, 8 Suffolk street & Her, 12 Cross Street. they married in the parish church of St Jude Bethnal Green so am asuming that they lived in that area then. Thanks Shirley

Shirley The age on the death certificate may not necessarily be accurate. My ggrandmother's age is out by 9 years on hers because the person registering the death obviously didn't know exactly when she was born Lou

Shirley I have the image if you want it, send me your email address. The unnamed infant is only a month old, according to the census, but there are no John Batchelors registered until Dec 1871. Obviously up until census night, April 2nd, he didn't have a name, so he could have been registered much later. You could order the cert you think, and ask for a checking ref of mother's name being Esther Batchelor formerly Emons Sam

Hi Lancashire Lou. His age tho is pretty consistant on what i have to date. Hes 22 on his marriage cert of march 1870 hes 33 on the 1881 census of 3rd april 1881 hes 37 on his death cert of aug 1884. So looks as if he had a birthday between 3rd April & Aug His death cert could be out by the year as he died of TB & its somebody from the hospital who registered his death the day after he died. in Aug 1884 Shirley
