Ooooo I bow to your far superior frustration. I was waking in the night & obsessing about it (which is how I managed to find him in the end- a moment of inspiration!), can't imagine how awful 4 years must be!!!! Mind you, I now can't find hi granparents & that is looking like it's going to be frustrating! Good luck! Off to change a pooey nappy, yippee. Nico

Karen, Can't help I'm afraid but can empathise! I had a similar situation with my g.g. grandfather I could find him from 1881 onwards but not before. It turned out that he was illegitimate and had taken his father's name until he married (Commanders) when he reverted to his mother's name (Palmer) so he was there as William Commanders pre-1881 & William Palmer after. I know it doesn't help you but I was tearing my hair out had been looking constantly for about 2 months when this turned up. -It comes when you least expect it. Good Luck! Nico

sorry everyone,i didn't get back on here last night. ok here goes Williams father was James Wallis, his mum Esther Wallis.in 1861 they were living in Somers Rd,Portsea and at that time William was a dealer,in 1872 when his son Ambrose was born he was a hawker. I'm assuming that both William and his 'Wife' Sarah were dead by 1881 as Ambrose is back in Portsmouth with an aunt (Williams sister) and uncle. Williams siblings were James1832,Esther,Jane 1837,Johannah 1837/8,Elizabeth 1838/9,Maria 1941,Eliza 1850,Thomas 1853 and Emily 1855 Thanks Karen

Considering place of residence, do you think he may be a mariner?
