As the National Health didn't start until after WW2, you won't find a number for her. Did he never speak of his mother. That would give a clue whether she lived near him or not. Elec Rolls may give some answer later if you find she was still living in the UK. Irene |

Alice From what you are now saying 'he was conceived in Ireland', do we assume that Kathleen was born in Ireland, if so there is no point in trying to find her in any census for England prior to his birth. Victor. |

I'm not sure when national insurance numbers started but I doubt they were around back then. The only way I think that you can track her is to wade through the GRO indexes for either a marriage or a death but seeing as you don't have any information on her that might be hard. The next census should help you but it won't be released until 2012! Hopefully someone else will be able to suggest something. Rachel |

Alice I feel you are realy going to struggle on this one. If the only reference point you have is your father's birth certificate you do not know Kathleen's age or where she was born. Do you know if she married, and if so, who did she marry? With this you can try to find the reference for that marriage and then send for the marriage certifcate which will give her age and her fathers name. If she was born in England/Wales it may be possible to find her on a census and then take it from there. Or find her on a later census. If you wish to come forwards and find out more about her after your father was born, then this would be more difficult. Hope this makes sense to you. Victor |

Alice - do you have your father's birth certificate? Does it leave the section for father of the baby blank? What was the mother's name then? Sue G in Berks |

Alice What information do you have on Kathleen? Are you trying to get further back from her or just research her life? I found a Kathleen Farrell in 1871 but her place of birth is Marlyebone, London, daughter to Hugh and Mary Ann Farrell living in Charing Cross, London. |
