Paula, A suggestion which may work: stand in records office and shout her name loudly ! (well it worked once.....) No one else will understand that, I'm obviously not called Mad alice for nothing...... Thought I'd just say hello! Alice

Hi Dawn, She was living in Great Bedwyn, Wilts when she died in 1957. My Dad was born in 1929 and remembers them from a very early age. They seemed to live in various places around that area. They had no children (that we know of) so another brick wall!!) Paula x

HI Dawn, The age thing with her is being a bit of a pain, although my Dad seems to think she was a bit older than him!! Hi Irene, Both father's were labourers (just typical) and the witnesses were Walter Harkett and Rose Ball. I did find a Rose Ball living in Barton Stacey in 1901, but she was only 14. Just don't know where to go with this one now!! (sob, sob) Paula x

Hi Helen, Her age is part of the problem, as we now have between 1868 - 1879!! I was hoping I could have found a Catherine, with a father Joseph anywhere. She definitely doesn't want to be found!! Paula x

Sometimes people made up a fathers name rather than admit they were illegitimate. Can you find any Catherine of about the right age?

Wifey Report 10 Jun 2005 20:19

My latest problem!! Oliver George Gregory, born 1882, marlborough, Wilts. On the 1901 census he is aged 18, a carter on a farm and son of George Gregory. We knew he married a Catherine/Kate, as my Dad remembers them both well. On 'Aunt Kate's' death cert she is aged 89. Died 16/12/1957, making her born 1868. After hunting for a possible marriage for them, we found one. Details as follows:- 1904 at Barton Stacey, Andover district, Hampshire Oliver George Gregory, age 24, carter, son of George Gregory. Catherine Frances Lawrence, age 24, dau of Joseph Lawrence. She was residing in St Augustine's, Highbury. (Somerset??) So, other than Oliver's age (being 3 years out) everything else fits, but what about Catherine? ............... Her age according to the marriage cert. makes her born about 1879................and I can't find a Catherine with a father Joseph on any census. HELP!!!!! Paula (very frustrated!!)
