On the IGI, I have Golden BALLS baptised 1836 in Aylsham, Norfolk. However, Norfolk Records Office cant find it. I had a lovely email saying that they had checked the IGI and had also looked a year either side. I have tried the Norfolk Transcription Service site, but his baptism is not on there. I have found his burial entry 1887 giving his age as 51, which takes me back to a birth year of 1836. So, is it his year of baptism that is wrong or the place. Where can I go now |

Hi Carol I thought the name was a wind-up at first (sorry, thinking about David Beckham!). I have looked at the IGI and the record in question is a member submission so any or all of the details could be wrong. As you can verify his age from census records, I would say that the submitter has got incorrect parish details. Unless the person in Norfolk who checked it for you missed it. Sam x |

Thank you all for suggestions. Thank you Heather for the 1851 census listing. I have the 3 counties disc and never thought of looking there, I forgot it included Norfolk. My mothers maiden name is BALL so the 's' got dropped somewhere along the line, probably by my grandmother. |

On the IGI it appears to be from a Patron Sheet rather than an extract by the LDS from parish registers but it has an exact date and place, it's puzzling! Heather |

There is a Golden Balls baptised 1813 in Aylsham. Is this his Dad? [Only know because I have a Balls in Aylsham] |

some IGI entries are obvious junk or guesswork, but this batch looks pretty convincing. The records it's taken from are out there somewhere I wonder if the R.O. covered all the bases. According to the LDS catalogue there's a Methodist chapel register, which ends in 1836, and a Methodist circuit register which starts in 1836. The Archdeacon's Transcripts might also be worth a look |

My Balls is my 5x Gt Grandmother, Ann. I believe she was born 1745 the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth. I went to Aylsham a few weeks back and found her grave. There was also a grave for an Ann Balls who died 9th April 1838 in her 71st year. Can you tie her in with your Balls at all? She was in our family group but don't know who she is. The name Stoneham was also on the tombstone. [Other Aylsham names Im interested in 'just in case' lol: Whiley,Platten, Goose and Rivett] |

Forgot to add it was Thomas Stoneham. But Mary and Joseph had a daughter Elizabeth who in turn had a base born son Thomas in 1802. Wonder who the Ann Balls on the gravestone was then? Just need to find out how Mary platten ties in with me now! lol Going back to have another look! |

I have access to 1841 Norfolk, but I can't view the images at work (something wrong with the PCs settings). I'll check when I get home as I think he's with his parents. Or, if anyone else has access, the details are as follows.... Census 1841 TNA Ref HO107-0761 Image No 81 Folio No 11 Page No 16 Entry No 5 Got it - Golden Balls 25 M Boatbuilder Y Mary Balls 25 F Y Golden Balls 4 M Y Sarah Balls 3 F Y John Balls 1 M Y Living Aylsham. I find it strange that they couldn't find a record of the baptism. He was definitely born in Norfolk. You also know both parents names from his sisters birth cert. I'm not sure where else to look, but it must be there somewhere. Is it possible they were baptists or catholics or something? This might explain why they weren't in the normal records. |
