I've only got my GGrandad's army number. He served in WW2 and maybe the latter part of WW1. Would this and his name be enough to request his service record? If not what information would I need and where would I find it? Also, how easy would it be to prove my relation to him? There aren't any living relatives that I know of and we do not share the same surname. I do however have his birth certificate and the original personal commendation that he received from Field Marshal Montgomery. Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi David If you phone historical disclosures on 0845 600 9663 then press 3 and speak to one of the super people there with the info you have they will be able to tell you what to do next I only had my fathers name and dob - after chatting to Bernadette she gave me the service number and regiment and then sent the necessary forms - costs £30 but hopefully will be worth the long wait - approx 3 months Good luck Ann

Sorry David I have been doing searches, a thread is a title of a subject on the board, a nudge is going into that thread entering 'nudge' so that it goes to the top of the board, without giving any info on the topic, hope this helps. Heather

If you decide to have a look at the national arcives documents online this is the address you'll need http://www.documentsonline.nationalarchives.gov.uk Try an advanced search using the name in the relavent boxes and the service number in other keywords. The results will gice you the regement and the rank at the time any medals were issued. These may be useful to get the service records.
