I know I might not disentangle them, but Grace's husband's family depend on it. They have an unusual middle name that seemed to be unique to them in their village. Now I find that a potential marriage (although submitted by an LDS member) for one of Grace's potential parental couples shows the bride to have the same name. Horrid ancestors! |

Hi Twinkle You may never be able to nail 'your' Grace down. The only way to try is to track down each and every Grace. I had three Milly Hedgers, all cousins, born 1780s and 1790s and I did manage to find marriages, trace them onto censuses and by comparing on the censuses, looking at who they were with etc, I did manage to separate them. That said, one of them had an illegitimate baby, and I haven't a clue which one, as they're all in the time frame. Good luck! |

Thanks for your replies. I've tried your suggestions but familyhistoryonline.net burials do not cover the parish early enough and there's no likely will on documentsonline. It seems that I will have to make the long haul to Cornwall at some point. |

Can you find any wills for any of the Graces' parents, especially after the date of your Grace's marriage? Could help to find out which was the right one. Kate. |

By using the parish registers can you kill off any Graces? I just thought that if you had the burials listed too with the baptisms you could probably guess a bit better. Pippa |

Thanks Nell. Storm is now here, so I'm switching the computer off for now. |

I can only suggest that you check the parish registers for each set of possible parents and see if any of the siblings of the various Graces have names which recur in Grace's children, or if there are any clues as to occupation. nell |

Parents' names aren't in the parish registers before 1837. Janice |

No, I had the OPC check her marriage. The only additional info was the groom's parish, there don't even appear to be any witnesses recorded. |

Her father's name will be on her marriage cert in the parish registers. Of course if he is called William, John or Thomas it won't be easy! nell |

Grace Andrew was very consistent in censuses when it came to detailing her age and birthplace. She did not have children suspiciously late in life and I have her daughter's birth certificate that records her maiden name. So it's unlikely she lied about her age or had a secret first marriage. The only blip is her death cert, but even that is only two years' out. Her children were baptised very shortly after birth (censuses and certificates confirm it), as her husband had been, so it seems as if the tradition was not to delay. Grace was probably born in 1792/3 in Sithians and there are 4 baptisms: two in 1791, 1792 and 1794 (although two parents of the same name baptised a Grace in 1794 and 1798 - but the IGI indicates there could be two couples). There are no clues in naming patterns - not that I know if Grace had siblings! It's just all so vague and watery and I want to know how I can be any more certain. I want it to be the 1792 couple, but that is hardly a justifiable reason! Any advice gratefully received. |
