Dawnieher3headaches Report 3 Jul 2005 16:51

Am doing siblings of hubbies gt grandmother. One of her sisters became a Setter. On the obit notice of their mother their is a wreath from Mr and Mrs E Setter 39 Mary Street. Now on 1901 census there is a Edward Setter and wife in Mary street. He is 6 years younger than sisters husband and was born in same town as him (not where they wer living then). Am I assuming too much to think that the two Setters are brothers and they sent flowers to his brothers mother in law?

That's a reasonable assumption, but you would need to prove the connection by finding the record of their marriage. nell

Heather Yes you did. James married Alice Lethbridge and its her mothers obit that has a wreath from Mr and Mrs E Setter Mary Street, Bovey which is why I thought about a connection and can find them still there in 1901 (funeral was 1933) and all bits tie in to Edward setter being James brother. Nell will have to get Alice and James marriage cert see if Edward is a witness.

Edward won't necessarily be a witness. I think it would be better to establish his wife's maiden name. nell

Nell I am probably being really stupid here and missing the obvious but why would Edwards marriage cert help me as he is my rellies brother in law. Was just trying to see the connection as they are mentioned on the Obit they must of known her and as her daughters married name was Setters put 2 and 2 together and have come up with 5 dawn

AND this looks like your James - shown as born London - it may be he thought he was born in Devon (like the parents are on this) ??? :1881 James Setter abt 1863 Poplar, Middlesex, England Son 4 New St, Poplar, London, England Jane Setter abt 1828 Devon, England Wife 4 New St, Poplar, London, England John Setter abt 1831 Devon, England Lodger (Head) 4 New St, Poplar, London, England Margaret Setter abt 1865 Poplar, Middlesex, England Daughter 4 New St, Poplar, London, England Mary Setter abt 1871 Poplar, Middlesex, England Daughter 4 New St, Poplar, London, England Tom Setter abt 1858 Poplar, Middlesex, England Son 4 New St, Poplar, London, England John is shown as a mariner, Tom as a sail maker and James as a warehouseman. Its a possible. Gaps between kids could take Edward as a bro I guess- though it may be dad was on a long sea trip?

This is that family in 1861: John L Setter born 1852 is actually down as Head's son (it is on the next page of the census) and a scholar.
