the enumerator might just have copied the householders' forms verbatim. A lot of enumerators must have done a lot of correcting as they copied the forms into the books, otherwise the general standard of spelling would be far worse than it is (as I expect we'll discover with the 1911). Not sure if they were supposed to. (Wonder how often they corrected something that was right to start with) |

I had another look at this this morning... There's another layer of problem here, apart from the handwriting: the enumerator didn't know how to spell a lot of placenames! Hants, Suthampton Suffolk, Lowestoff Hants, Odiam Suffolk, Burry St Edmunds Essex, Kelevdon Essex, Southchuch Essex, Billeracay Sussex, Hasburnhamn (prob Ashburnham (Place)) That's just on two pages (and assuming I've read his handwriting correctly)! Ancestry's BMD is sourced from the FreeBMD database. If that's the source of your checking, you can't assume there aren't any Annie Coppings born in the 1850s ... A quick look at the coverage pages on FreeBMD shows that there are very few births transcribed from 1853(Dec qtr) to 1858(Dec qtr). In that period, of the ones with any significant amount transcribed, there are fewer than 40% for 1854(Sep qtr) and 1858(Sep qtr), about 70% for 1856(Jun qtr) and about 65% for 1857(Jun qtr)... otherwise nil. The enumerator has quite open letters and the end of her first name is a bit faint. It looks a bit like Annn or Anner or something, but I think it might be Anna (rather than Annie) The handwriting of the place is slightly different, but I hadn't thought it looked different enough to be another person - just the same person going back later, say. It should be said that the first letter we've been interpreting as an O could be any of a number of letters, especially if it isn't the same hand. Christine |

Mike, Did she marry Henry Daniels? In 1891 it says Great Bradley in Norfolk, although that's in Suffolk now. Crista |

The line further up has 'Hants Odiam' - presumably Odiham, written as best he could. Annie's PoB is Cambs and then it looks as if it starts 'Odi' but it has what looks like a 'b' next and the end looks more like 'arn' or 'orn'... or possibly 'am' Christine |
