Helen Well Done! To save going into windows each time you want to open the file: go into windows explorer, Right Click the mouse, choose 'Create Shortcut' if the shotcut doesn't appear on your desktop: minimise the explorer window (click the 2 screens between - & + top right of screen) drag the shotcut to your desktop Elly

Hello everyone. Thank you all for your help. I'm not quite sure how, but I have now managed to install the necessary Wizard thingy and now have PAF! (I went into Windows Explorer and managed to open it from there). Thanks again for your patience with a computer novice! Regards and good luck in your own research Helen

Thanks, Michael. I have done as you suggest and opened a PAF and a GEDCOM file type, but when I click on the PAF icon, I still get the same message as before. Helen

Try checking the following; go to Start,Settings,Control Panel, Folder Options & File Types. If you don't see PAF in the list then click 'New' and type in PAF and click ok. At the same time check to see that you have GEDCOM file type on the list, if not repeat the above steps. Try opening the PAF family tree program again. Regards,Michael

Victor (and Elly) No, it doesn't appear there. I presume it hasn't fully downloaded. (I'm afraid I shall have to cede the computer to my teenage son now for a while, as he claims he has some GCSE homework to finish!) Many thanks for your help/speak to you again soon, I hope. Helen

Thanks for trying to help, Victor. I am on broadband, but I think the problem probably lies within my PC. I saved the program to my desktop, as suggested by LDS, but when I double-clicked on the desktop icon for the PAF program, and asked for English version, it was at that point I got the message above. Helen Okay that should be fine. How long did it take before you got the message. And are you on Broadband. Victor

Victor I went into the FamilySearch website, clicked on 'Order/Download Products', then on 'Software Downloads - Free'. I then registered my details and pressed the top download button for PAF 5.2 all languages version. Helen

Hi Elly Thanks for your interest. Yes, I am trying to download the PAF file to my PC from the LDS site, for the first time. Someone has offered me some info. for which I need a GEDCOM program, and I have been putting off downloading, as I have never done anything like it before!

Please can anyone suggest (in simple terms, please!) why, after downloading the PAF5 (both the FTP and HTTP versions) from the LDS site, I get the following message: 'The InstallShield Engine (iKernel.exe) could not be installed. The system cannot read from the specified device' Has anyone else had this problem? Is it something to do with Norton or the settings on my computer? If so, what do I need to change, please? Helen (not very clued-up when it comes to computers!)
