Is it a name in it's own right or is it an abbreviation?

Eleanor is the most common one I think. It can be a name in it's own right as well though (I think)

Eleanor. Helen, Helena, Ellen, etc, are all variations of Helen and all can be shortened to Nell or Nellie. My grandmother was Ellen and known as Lou, My other grandmother was Louise or Louisa and known as Nell. Work that one out! David

Nell/Nellie is an abbreviation for Helen/Ellen/Eleanor though it is often used as a name in its own right. Little Nell

Both, it can be an abbreviation, but also a name of it's own. I have an ancestor, Nellie Littlejohns. Who was born, married and died with that as her first name. regards, Siobhan

Everybody called my grandmother Nellie but her real name was Ellen, having said that Nellie can also be a name in itself. Marie

Well after much searching, I've found out my Nellie was an Ellen. Name abbreviations are so odd! On one occation I spent ages looking for a GG Aunt who was known as Sissy/Cissy - only to find her real name was Florence! Thanks to all......
