This is beside the point, but I like Anne Williams age 71 in the previous household, whose occupation is 'Pauper' crossed out with 'Ag. Lab's Daur' written in! Kate. |

I expect the enumerators checker (who I assume was the one to add the OP) considered the WHOLE of Africa to be part of the Empire? lol Maybe he thought ''Africa'' refered to South Africa? Sarah |

I can see that there are other people who have ''BSOP' alongside their place of birth in 1881. These are all overseas births and the BS=British Subject, but I don't know what OP stands for?? Sarah |

I looked on Ancestry version as there I can see the original page. The OP refers to the place of birth, rather than the occupation (which is down as sailor only). Africa has been lightly crossed through and O.P. written alongside in the same pale but thick hand (might be pencil??) Apart from the point that ''Africa'' isn't a country, I can't see why it was crossed through. I can send you the image if you like? Sarah |
