Jim, I think the Sarah HAzelwood in 1871 is a sister in law of Mary/Sarah. Twinkle and the Louise - thanks for the 1891 and 1901 entries. Think that is good evidence that Samuel was son of Mary Hazelwood and Thomas Jacobs. Guess Mary couldn't take the Jacobs surname as they were in a village where everyone would haver known Thomas was her brother in law and so a marriage would have been forbidden.

Yes Christine, I have the images from 1871 and '81 - they are pretty clearly James and Samuel, though of course the enumerator could have misread his own notes when he wrote up the pages I suppose. Thanks Jim, I looked at neighbours in '71 and 81 to check it was the same Mary but didn't look at them in 1861 (slaps own wrists) That has to be the same Mary I'm sure.

Twinkle

Twinkle Report 23 Jul 2005 13:08

You've probably already looked, but there was only one Samuel Hazlewood born in the right time-frame, but in Walsall. There were three James Jacobs, St Austell, Haverfordwest and Shoreditch. I couldn't see a Samuel Jacob or a James Hazlewood. On 1901 census, I found this: Samuel Hazlewood 34 Cambs Wood Ditton Wood Ditton Entire General Labourer

Have you seen the original entry (or image of) to see the script for 'James' and 'Samuel'? I would guess that they could look very similar. Christine

Thanks for the input Ann, sorry for the delay in responding, I had to push a barrow load of garden waste the length of the village to the green waste lorry, which spends 20 minutes in the village each saturday. Yes the family are on the 1851 census (in fact I've just found 3 even older children on there so thanks for reminding me to look) but Sarah was still alive then and Elizabeth not yet born so doesn't help me much. I think you are probably right that Sarah and Mary may have been sisters and that Mary moved in to help with the children when Sarah died. I'm sure the birth certificate will tell me whether Elizabeth was Sarah's or Mary's - as Mary wasn't living there in 1871 probably not her. Its the James/Samuel puzzle that has got me stumped the most. The name is clearly written as James Jacob in 1871 but no sign of Samuel Hazelwood who would only have been 4 (have his birth entry on the GROindex) which is why I thought he could be the same child. I shall have to trawl the GRO again I think.

Have you found the family on 1851? Have you searched for the births of elizabeth and Samuel to get the references? You could then send for their birth certificates which would hopefully give the parents' names. Mary could well be Sarah's sister. My Gtx3 Grandfather married two sisters, one of whom lived in the family home before his first wife, her sister died. Ann Glos

Can anyone help me to solve the confusion of my Jacob cousins in Saxon Street, Wood Ditton, Cambridgeshire? Thomas Jacob was baptised in Wood Ditton 1819. In 1841 Thomas married Sarah Hazelwood. In 1861 Thomas was a widower living with 4 children, William 14, John 12, Robert 9 and Elizabeth 6 RG9/1031 folio 172 page 37 The only death for Sarah Jacob I can find at present was in 1852 so either Elizabeth had a different mother or Sarah's death is not yet transcribed. In 1871 Thomas, still a widower, has Robert 20, Agnes 8, and James 5 listed as sons and daughter. Also in the household is Mary Hazelwood, unmarried 45, acting as housekeeper and Henry Hazelwood 20 a lodger. RG9/1595 folio 88 page 34 In 1881 I can't find Thomas but Mary Hazlewood, unmarried 55, is still living in Wood Ditton but with a son Samuel aged 14. I haven't found any of the Jacob sons but both Elizabeth and Agnes were living in neighbouring parishes as domestic servants. SO I'm trying to puzzle out Who was Agnes and James' mother? - was it Mary? Where was Samuel in 1871 or are James Jacob and Samuel Hazlewood the same boy? Judith
