Can anyone help me? My Grandmother's Aunt was known as Min. I am still in the early stages of researching my tree but if anyone could shed any light on alternatives for Min that would help me lots! I think it may be Margaret. Also, her husband was just known as Sun/Son...this has really baffled me. Seems like I have located the 'odd' branch of my family though!!! many thanks Kelly xxx

Hi, Millicent was my friend's name and it was shortened to Min, not sure why Milly sounds more appropriate. Sonny is a Christian name. Try Solomon, just a long shot but sometimes names have been known to be shortened according to how younger children pronounce them. Good Luck Sandra

SON is more a problem to find I think. My elder bro was always called Son by all of us till he rebelled at 18 when he was called up on Nat Service & would come home on leave with mates!!!. We were firmly told ,dont call me son, my name is Stanley. Dont know how he came to be called son, think it was my dad who would say to him , for instance, come here son, & it stuck. Think your going to have to look for marriage cert on surname of your aunt, & their surname Shirley

Whilst Min can be short for Minnie which is a name in its own right, and I'm sure for outher names beginning with m as well, and I suppose Son could be short for Solomon it seems much more likely that they were nicknames - I've come across a Min(nie) who was the smallest/youngest in the family, and one who shared a christian name with her mother so was called Min instead. Equally Son could have been referred to as son by his father and perhaps younger siblings heard dad calling him that and copied, or, as one of my acquaintance, could have had a sunny disposition and so was called Sunny, shortened to Sun, then spelt Son.......

My aunt Min was Minnie, her given name. Son could be used if the son had the same first name as his father.

You could look up the parish registers for your Grandmothers baptism and hopefully the rest of the family will be there too? You might get lucky and find your Gt Aunt Min's marriage in the same parish, thus giving you her husbands name!
