Re the missing marriage - is it a second marriage for James? There are a lot of children on the 1861 census, eldest is 13, but you say first child born abt 1860. Sarah

That 1847 marriage shows up on the Lancs BMD site http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk, too: Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1847 Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference LOCKETT James SLADEN Martha Rochdale, St Chad Rochdale CE11/11/449 You can get a copy cert from them by using that ref as a link to a part-completed application form. Same fees. Or you could see if you can get access to the St Chads registers (prob the images in film/fiche format) at a county records library and get a copy. Then you get to see the actual signatures (or Xs) of the ancestors - and it's only for the cost of a photo-copy (and poss small fee if you're asking a library to get it for you and send it), instead of £7.
