I've seen Polly used for Mary in my tree. Though it may be a shortened version of another name. Gem:))) |

POLLY Gender: Female Meaning: Bitter Origin: Latin Variation of the name MOLLY, which comes from Mary. Often used as a nickname for Paula and is considered a name on its own. This is on names site Deborah |

Depending on what you are looking for I got very confused with my Polly. On the cesus she was Mary after she married. On her marriage certificate she was Mary. I found her in the census with her parents as Polly thought fair enough nickname. I ordered 2 certs - came back incorrect. It turned out that she was born Polly and obviously wanted to sound more mature when she married! Pippa |

Why M = P I have no idea, but there are several examples: Mary - Molly - Polly Margaret - Meggy - Peggy Martha/Matilda - Matty - Patty There were so many Pollys in my father's family (all Mary Elizabeths) that they had to have additional nicknames: Big Aunty Polly, Little Aunty Polly, Aunt Polly out Stubbington..... |

I have a gt gt aunt who was known as Aunt Polly Em. Her name was Emily and apparently she kept a parrot! Sometimes I think it is a remarkable achievement that we find any of our ancestors. nell |
