Merry Monty Sorry, i had to go back and look up your questions. No, I havent got Marion Ellen Howe on a census, mainly because i dont know a lot about her, she married in Birmingham and her age is given as 'full' on the cert. There are a load of Ellen Howe's but not many Marion's which doesnt seem to be very common c 1860's, and i am wondering if in fact she was a Mary Ann. Re. Henry, yes, i have found him right back to his birth living with parents Martin Henry 1836 and Ellen born Ashford Kent 1835 Sometimes Henry is Harry, his occupation is shown as clerical, i.e. entry clerk or commission clerk maureen

Hi Everyone very sorry for the delay, my computer suddenly decided it 'could not find server' been like it for a few days and then it came back last night, dont quite know what is happening. In reply to all your answers Joan According to Dorothy, she was born August 1900, which would more or less tally with what the 1901 census says. The Dorothy you found that was born in 1896 was a cousin, as mentioned above. Kate Yes, that is the correct census you have found. The home was attached to a Church Mission House and i was told by Hornsey Council that children of poor families and sick children were housed there. Dorothy herself said that she grew up in a 'big house' with a governess, dont know if she stayed in this home or went elsewhere. The whole family doesnt appear to be poor, they were drapers, grocers, one even ended up as Mayor of Kingston in Surrey. (They were the brothers of Henry) Jess Yes, that is the first born - I did have her details, it was just that when i wrote my message it was late at night and didnt want to wake everyone up rummaging about in drawers. She was born in the quarter after the parents married. There is a visitor named William Moatt shown on 1901 census as being in the same house as a Sydney Moatt and his family and it also says 'Cannot Ascertain' where he was born, so i dont know if this is the same William that is shown as being in the home. Also on 1901 census there is a Henry Moatt shown as aged 63 a daughter Doris aged 30 and another daughter called Elsie aged 28. These are the correct names for Dorothy's father and two of her sisters, but the ages are miles out - approx 20 years. on looking on the actual census is looks as if, not known ,was written when they were filled in and then someone has come along and hazarded a guess at the ages because Henry states he is retired. On the 1891 census Henry is shown as a commission agent. Yes, some of you may have seen all of this before, it has been causing me nightmares for ages, i keep going back to it till it does my head in, then i leave it for a while, till i see some kind person offering to help, and i think to myself 'i wonder' then off i go again. maureen

I think I remember these Moatts from before, and I don't know if it was the same census or a different one, but they were all given wildly wrong ages and I seem to remember the father's occupation was something like 'gentleman'. Kate.

What was dad Henry's occupation? Have you got Henry or Marion on any earler census returns? MMM

Just had a look too- Dorothy aged 7 months and william aged 2 in All saints convalescent Home in Hornsey, middlesex. Have you found Ethel in 1901 ?

Kate

Kate Report 12 Aug 2005 09:51

If I have the right 1901 census entry, it was actually a Convalescent Home, not a Children's Home, i.e. the children were there recovering from illness, not because their parents had died or given them up. All the children's birthplaces are given as 'Cannot ascertain' which doesn't help much. RG13/1244 Registration district: Edmonton Sub-registration district: Hornsey ED, institution, or vessel: 44 Folio: 45 Page: 20 (click to see others on page) Household schedule number: 106 The nearest birth I can find on FreeBMD is this one: Births Jun 1900 --------------------------------------------------------------------- Moss Dorothy Ellen Islington 1b 305 but this is probably somebody completely different! Granpa Jim Dorothy was the mother of an elderly lady that i know, she tried several years ago by paying GRO and i think she said they looked 2 years either way of her supposed d.o.b 1900 (August) but they could find nothing. I have trawled 1837 10 years either way. Its no as if she was the only child, there were 4 before her, just to add to the mystery i cant find the parents or elder children on 1901 census maureen

How widely have you cast your net? Could her birth have been registered at Granny and Grandad's Parish for example? By 1901 the Railway was commonplace, even the London Underground was 60 years old by then, so travelling was easy.
