Could Lazarus be her middle name and the enumerator just forgot to put the 'ditto' after it? Can't find any marriages on ancestry for surname Lazarus. Kath. x |

thanks for your thoughts, I am very depressed today ,thought I had the right info and ordered the certs nearly all wrong, how many Abraham Rose and family could there be for gods sake ??? I am wondering if this family are the children of his brother as I seem to recall his brother came here with him, that will teach me to not be in such a hurry . The good news is I got the copy of The Times dated 31/3/1866 which has the full Bankruptcy case for Abraham Rose absolutely fascinating reading which I would not have known about, without some wonderful help on here thank you again |

In Victorian times and before people often didn't worry about the ''in-law'' bit (except when explaining step children, where they were quite likely to say, dau/son-in-law, which is confusing for us today, to say the least!!) Anyway, mother, father, brother, sister, were widely used for non blood relations. I will bet you lots of dosh that this lady is not Abraham's mum (unless there is a Whitechapel in Germany lol!!) I first became aware of this when reading Pride and Prejudice at a young age, Mr Wickham says to his new sister-in-law, Elizabeth Bennett (his wife's sister) ''I am afraid I interrupt your solitary ramble, my dear sister?''' So if Jane Austen thought it OK, so do I lol MMM |

Valerie She could be the wifes mother. I have census entries where someone was recorded as mother/sister/brother etc in relation to a male head of the house but I know they were infact his inlaws. Jacqui |

Why would they have had to be born in the same country? My grandfather was born in Brazil, his sister in the US and his brother in France . As for their parents, My g grandfather was born in Hungary and my g grandmother was born in Austria! Pat |

Hi, The relationship, means to the head therefore I would assume that it is his mother. Maybe she remarried to a Lazarus? Pat |

if on a census the head and his wife appear with someone who is the mother would she be his or her mother hope this makes sense as the Heads surname is Rose ( yes him again) but the mothers surname is Lazarus which I did not think was the wifes maiden name |
