Hi The Haverhill family history told me there was an error on a marriage certificate so I sent for an original got this morning. The bridegrooms name was was the wrong one and although it had been crossed out and right put in, this was not on the copy from the GRO I am now wondering if there was a mistake on the age as well but not put right, as finding him in a census the age was 10 years out. What do you think Margaret |

Do you know nothing suprises me in this family research. Have uncovered many warts in the family which they must have thought they had covered their tracks on They wouldnt have given a thought in future that records would reveal truths. But I guess ,it didnt matter then as they were holding their secrets, & in some cases their dignity & later on when they were gone, what did it matter. So I guess we must view all possibilities with an open mind. Shirley |

Hi Margaret,, I should have thought that all mistakes would have been corrected??but what years are we talking of? perhaps the correct name was more important to put right than the age ?? 10 years out is a lot! kay, |

Hi Kay and Shirley, this was 1871 and it clearly said age 24 but ten years later in the 1881 census it says he was 44, never got very far on this family so now I really wonder. Margaret |

Hi Kay he had died by the 1891 census and that leads to another sore point with I can't find a death certificate for him even though I looked through all the records at the family records office for years before and a lot after, found his wife on the 1891 census she was down as a widow and she remarried 4 years later, have that certificate Margaret |

We had a humourous talk at a family history meeting which illistrated how census info could be taken in some cases with a pinch of salt. I have one rellie who aged 15 years from 1861 to 1871 then another 5 years to his death cert, in 1870.s which put his birth record in 1780,s rather than 1801. Shirley |

'Abandoned' wives often declared themselves widows, especially if they had young children. This was so they had chance to remarry and have someone to support her and her children financially. |

Hi Thank you all but people have tried before his name was William Poole sometimes without the E his fathers name was George and the nearest I have come to a William Poole being born with a father George was in 1831 being christened at Haverhill, but think this might have been to early for him if so I can't find any other birth for him or find him at all. but if his age was really up the creek and he lied about his age this could be the right one have been doing it now for well over three years Margaret |

Hi Margaret, Have been wondering about your William for a long time, I think you are going to have to rule out the William Brooks Pool aged 55, died Mar 1888 on Freebmd in Edmonton, he's probably the one you have found b 1831. Best wishes Amanda |
