Pippa My cert arrived the next day. Right first two names, right address, right mother's maiden name. Father who was James McCarthy on 1861 census and changed to James Carter for 1871 and all subsequent censuses, is Dennis McCarthy on the birth cert! See my thread on this board titled 'Help! Jess! Fiona! Anyone! Cert has arrived and I am totally confused!' for further info. nell

It has just been found out that a relief post person has stolen our mail! She had money problems and as she only covered areas for a couple of days no-one noticed. What finally happened was that the company re-possessed her car. When they opened the car it was full of mail! We have now got a postcard that my parents sent to my son in June! It had a picture of horses on it that he really likes. I know she was desperate for the money but to keep all the mail as well is just plain mean. It my be worth chasing up the GRO! Pippa

There were definitely Sunday deliveries in the 1950's. One of my friends mum was a post lady and delivered on a Sunday in the 50's. Kath. x

well I am not that old but I too remember Sunday deliveries and a second post which we have not had for years , maybe it depends on what area you live in.

Geoff Well it must be true that memories play false tricks - I was sure I used to get letters on a Sunday with 3d stamps on them. Oh well. nell

You're older than I thought Nell 'In England, postal deliveries on Sundays are but a dim and distant memory. Sunday deliveries in most areas were curtailed as an economy measure around the end of World War I and a general cessation of Sunday deliveries was implemented in 1921.'

Victor and Heather Thanks a lot - you've really brightened my day - NOT! nell

Hi Nell The first time I ordered from the GRO was in the days when delivery time was about two weeks. After waiting four weeks I contacted them and they said they'd sent it out and it had been returned address unknown, a bit puzzling as they had all my details correct. Heather

Nell You and your mysteries, you thrive on them. I would not like to be in the postmans shoes if it doesn't come soon. I think the order of the day for him will be, check bag, if no certificate, run. I too hope it is not a 'sorry can't find it' message, we will only charge you £4.00. Victor

Think yo had better swithch off your pc, and lock yourself in a room till you get better Keep saying to yourself 'Im not a family history addict' say it every day and you should be cured in say 30 years or so. good luck TED.

Michael you cheeky wotsit! I remember two posts a day AND Sunday postal delivery too, so there! I have deliberately been patient, but this is the first time GRO have given me a date and not met it. I hope it doesn't mean they can't give me the cert as it should solve a 139-year-old mystery. I hope!

We didn't have any post for 2 days this week & then had masses the next day - perhaps they are cutting down on the number of days you get post round here !! Penny

The postman has just been (it's nearly 11.00 am - I remember when the post was on the mat when I got up!) and the cert I was told would come today isn't here. Arrghh! nell
