Hi Bev Could this be Eliza in 1871 Grimsby, in family of John H Collingwood, a Grocer's Assistant Eliza Wilson, an unmarried 21 year old domestic servant born in Louth Of course, she may have married before 1871, no trace of Ephraim though, could he have followed his father to sea and be away in 1871? Bev - just in case you're wondering, if Elizabeth's daughters are described as her husband's 'daughters in law' it is just that in those days they often used 'in law' as we now use 'step'. Kate.

It's something that's puzzled me in the past - why on earth did I see 'Mariners' in Louth, the place being where it is (10 miles from the sea). I've just found out that it has a canal to Tetney Lock and onwards to the North Sea. Ann from Sussex - I can beat that - one of mine was widowed in 1873 but remained 'married' until 1901 at least ...

Geoff you darling, will you marry me????? lol that confirms it joshua is the guy on the boat obviously off on his travels in 1851!! tried to find his death on FreeBMD, only 2 possibles were in Halifax, but then i spose the ship could have been moored there. more likely she divorced him cos he was never home, although he must have visisted cos they had 6 kids! Eliza bc 1852, Ephraim bc 1850, kessey bc 1857, maria bc 1859, Mary ann bc 1854 & sarah bc 1861 thankyou so much Geoff, you always come to my rescue and thanks to the rest of you too, i def could not have got this far in one afternoon if it hadn't been for you guys. if anyone needs look ups in Somerset, then let me know, i am 20 mins from the FRO Bev

I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS by 1871 Elizabeth has remarried, to a joseph Johnson age 59 b Barton Lincolnshire. there are 3 of Elizabeths girls living with them at 5 Edwards Yard Louth, discribed as daughter in law! plus 2 more kids Emma ada Johnson age 4 & William johnson age 2. missing are elizabeths children Eliza Wilson bc 1852, Ephrain Wilson bc 1850 & Kessey Wilson bc 1857. have found Ephrain from 1881 onwards, married with family still living in louth. so if anyone finds Kessey, Eliza &/or Ephrain/m in 1871 please shout Bev

the thing is, there is no other joshua Wilson that i can find that fits anywhere near. now that June has given me the fathers name i know that the marriage to Elizabeth Bratley is correct. and if the age is 46, then that also fits with my josh. mind you i cannot find them in 1871/81 either. so it is hard to be 100% sure if i cannot find both of them living together with the kids! why couldn't he be an ag lab and stay at home like the rest of my lot?????? lol Bev

Ann looking at the image now do you think the age could be 46???? or am i trying too hard to make it fit??? lol Bev

June thankyou, that has confirmed i have the right marriage. could the birthdate of Joshua on the vessel be 1815 and not 1835??? Bev

Bev Report 29 Aug 2005 17:13

i saw him Kathleen and got all excited. but it would mean he was only 15 when his son was born! and my joshua was bc 1815 although that info has come from the IGI so it may be wrong, but the dates fit with his parents and siblings. also if i have the right marriage Joshua & Elizabeth were married 17/12/1848. There is a married Joshua Wilson on a vessel on the 1861 census, age 26, born Louth if that could be him. Kath. x

with the help of some wonderful people on here i have managed to add a few more Wilson's to my tree. today i revisited the 1861 census, and a little stumbling block that admittedly i have been avoiding. now isn't it funny when to go back to something and see a detail you swear was not there the first time??? in 1861 in James St louth RG9/2380 pg 8. there is a family headed by elizabeth wilson, in the household is a lodger called James Wilson. now i thought it odd that James (my gtgt grandad) would lodge with a family of the same name, but then it is not an uncommon name. new info however has me thinking that this Elizabeth is/was in fact James's sister in law. and that she was married to his brother Joshua. no sign of the family on the 1851, even though the youngest child Ephrain (sic) was born c1850. looking closely at the census Elizabeth is transcribed as Married NOT widowed. So why is she the head? and where is hubby (possibly joshua) any suggestions as to where i go next??? all help gratefully recieved Bev
