Ive found a relative and his name is William Crone. According to 1881 census he married a woman called Martha but I cannot find their marriage on Free BMD. Does anyone have any suggestions? With Regards Jody

Jody, Make sure you have 'phonetic surname' checked in case his last name has been mistranscribed. Always check a year or two back and forward of the date you think, census are not very reliable in that regard. Also search on neighbouring counties as boundaries have changed, and also look at what freebmd actually contains, it's not all transcribed yet. Also, see if the local records office has online bmd info, Durham Council for example, has great online records. What date/county are you looking for, that will help people search. Brenda

Cumberland doesn't have a searchable online BMD site (I don't think, anyway) and the eldest child seems to be: Sarah Jane Crone abt 1867 Cmouth, Cumberland, England Daughter which puts the marriage in teh middle of the 1860s when FreeBMD is very sparse for marriages, I think? According to 1881 William was 39 years old which would mean he was born appro 1842. He was born in Cockermouth, cumberland. It states Martha was 38 and born in Cockermouth also.

Christine, that sounds like them. Just my luck not being able to find marriage.

How do I search on 1837 online and what will it tell me? Ive never used it before.

Looking at Freebmd images, they have images for 1863 and then 1866, nothing for 64 and 65 unfortunately. www.1837online(.)com - remove brackets - is a pay per view site, but they list the GRO reference you need to order a certificate for EVERY bmd from 1837. Ancestry lists the death of a William Crone in Cockermouth in 1894, age 52. Mar Q 1894 10b 349 Might be the same person if you have him on 1891 but not 1901. Brenda
