It was certainly useful. I'm fairly sure that William will turn out to be born to Mary Jane. Unless one of the other sisters gave birth before they were 14, she is the only one who fits age-wise...but it would be unwise to just 'assume' that!!! Lou |

Thanks for that. While I enjoy puzzle-hunting for its own sake, it's always better if the results are positively useful! And, if you haven't shelled out for the marriage certs, you might be able to get ph-copies of the Church Register pages instead - which is much cheaper - plus you get to see the bride & groom's own signatures (or Xs). Appreciate your time and your help Cheshire BMD hadn't got all those listed the last time I tried to tackle this family, I got what I had from freebmd and ancestry, so it's been good to see them all listed and there's the unnamed baby to look into as well now And I hadn't got the actual birth details for William which I now have! Yep, they be mine as well! I looked up the entry at the local office today for Emma and Alfred Hall and there's no father listed. John and Eliza are my ggrandparents. Apparantly, family stories go that she was 6ft 2' with a temper to match her red hair and after her husband died, she decided to emigrate to Canada on her own. She certainly went to Canada - I have her 1936 death cert. Whether she went alone remains to be seen! |

Mary Jane down to Joseph are Eliza's siblings. Joseph 1892 is another child of James and Sarah. William is with George and Emma in 1881 as grandson. He died aged 5. Will get to him later as to who is mother/parents were! The unnamed one I hadn't seen so will note that to look into in the future |

Thanks Christine This family are a nightmare. George's parents originated in Ireland so haven't been brave enough yet to even venture down that road and am collecting as many different ways of spelling the surname as I am wrong birth certs! Lou |

I thought I'd have a look on the LancsBMD site. Nothing specifically relevant - but I did spot this one (using soundex - which does suggest some other possible variants)... Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1907 Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference GLADDERY Ellen BAILEY James Salford Register Office Salford SAL/101/147 Christine |

Hi Deborah This is an odd one! I've got that certificate already. The child was born 20 Nov 1887 in Ashton under Lyne. Parents James Glathers and Louisa Glathers, formerly Holt, but the mother informed the birth and gives an address in Liverpool....as though they were just visiting the area when Emma was born. Eliza has a brother James but he married in 1885 to Sarah Hadley so don't think Emma could be their child. Sarah didn't die until 1914. I haven't located a marriage anywhere between James Glathers and Louisa Holt The birth Christine found IS James and Sarah's daughter. I'm getting quite a collection of 'Emma' birth certs! Lou |

It looks a bit late-registered - but is almost certainly another variant... Name: Gladrey, Emma Record Type: Births Quarter: June Year: 1891 District: Ashton under Lyne County: Cheshire Lancashire Volume: 8d Page: 487 Christine |

1891 census - Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire George Gladerry HEAD 47 Emma Gladerry WIFE 55 John SON 22 Joseph SON 18 Annie DAUG 16 Emma DAU 3 All children unmarried and born Ashton under Lyne 1901 census - Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire John Maynard HEAD 41 (actual age - 47!) Eliza WIFE 32 (daughter of George & Emma above - actual age 29!) Emma DAUG 13 Agnes DAUG 7 Edith DAUG 4 Elsie DAUG 1 All children born Ashton under Lyne I think Emma is the same child in both census but I cannot find a birth registration for her. Emma married in 1905 full claiming full age when, if the above is her, she was only 17. Her surname was stated as Glathery. There is no father listed on the cert. Therefore, I think she may have been born to Eliza (or possibly one of her sisters)and she was either recorded in error in 1891 as daughter, not grand-daughter or George and Emma claimed she was theirs. Odd, though, that if she was born to Eliza, she and John were married before the 1891 census. I've checked 1880 to 1890 and can't find her registered as Emma Maynard. The Gladerry surname changes spelling wherever you look. George was born McGladdery, Eliza married as Gladthery, I have found George and Emma previously stated as Gladrey. I've tried the usual variations and come up with nothing. Any help appreciated so I can try and establish who she was born to! Thanks Lou |
