Nicky, why not take it to your local family History Society or to your local records office, or reference library where other family researchers hang out, theres bound to be someone who can read it, there always is, its always worked for me. I had an example of my wifes g/ggrandfather on the 1871 census, and he got married in LONDON in 1873. On the marriage certificate it gave his place of residence as Bristol Workhouse, but showing it to the members of the local history society, then said it wasnt Bristol Workhouse, but Birstall, Yorkshire. Looking at it again I realized how stupid I had been. That was a photo copy from the WANDSWORTH RECORDS OFFICE. Hope you get it sorted. TED.

Is it just the handwriting you can't read, or is the whole cert unreadable - if you want to scan it and send a copy to me, I'll see if I can read it for you if it's just the handwriting. Regards Trudy

Another thing you can do is to phone the local reg office where the original cert is held and ask if they can look at the original cert? You will need to give then the particulars of the cert that you can read, including the sub-district and also the date the event was registered, in order for them to find the original in their records. Nicky If you scan and email the certificate to me Im willing to try and decipher it. Or you could email the GRO and ask them to check what it says Quoting the vol and page number you used when ordering it. I diid this last week when I couldnt read the age heard back from them the following day. Sue
