I have been trying to find the birth of my Gt Grandad for 18 months. He is on census for 1881/1891/1901 as being born in Kings Caple - Herefordshire about 1856. I can find no trace of him before that and wondered if he was put in the workhouse when born. If so which one would it be and can anyone help please. Many thanks. Pat |

Hello Patricia Don't know if this may help but have you looked at the workhouse website? Can't find the address easily at the mo but if you google it is is something like 'peterworkhouses'. Anyway, I found the workhouse my grandad was born in through it! Good luck Allie ps there is a thread with useful sites here somewhere and that had the website address on it! |

The inmates of Workhouse were listed on census ,s too. I found some relations on 1871 census in a workhouse in Greenwich SE London including the infirmary part of the workhouse were the wife was an inmate. Both husband & wife eventually died in the workhouse. Shirley |

Debby His name is George Preece, I have his marraige and Death certs but I cannot find his birth cert anywhere, I have sent for all the George Preece on 1837 but none match. I'm clutching at straws now. Many thanks. Pat |

Pat Have you his parents names? Does his father appear on the marriage certificate? Could you post the details you've found for him on the 1881? Unfortunately, I have to go out now but I will check this thread when I'm back and if no-one has found him I'll have a look. I have already checked 1861 but there are a few George Preece - need to narrow it down a bit. Debby |

Hi Pat Is his age consistent on the 3 census you found him? I have found a George Preece with father Henry on 1861 but he's showing as age 7 not 5? The only 2 George Preece born in Herefordshire showing on Ancestry are 1854 (assume he's the one above) and 1858. That was with a search of + or - 2 years of 1856 although of course it is incomplete. Debby, must be tea time I hadn't clocked that, better delete it. I mean the 1861 not the 1871. Gloria x |

Hi Girls, Thank you all for your input, Yes his age is consitant on all census of course I only have from 1881 when he was married. I did ring the church in Kings Caple 18mths ago and they looked through the register for me and found 2 George Preece born around that time both to unmarried mothers. The one had a mother called Maria and I have followed his line and he isn't the one. The other mother was Sarah Preece and I cannot find anything on this one. They both seem to have disappeared into thin air. This is why I am now thinking workhouse or foundling home, he had to be somewhere. Thankyou all for your help, I won't be on this afternoon as I have to go to Sheffield to see the grandaughter, shes at uni, and I am overdue a visit. Many thanks. Pat |
