Hi Whilst doing some searches on LDS it popped up with a web page for 'Selected Executions in England from 1606.' I went on the site and OMG it is a link for Newgate Prison in London. It gives the Persons Name. Execution Date.and Reason of Execution and Place of Trial. This is what it says. In The reign of Henry VIII. (38 Years) It is said that no less a number than 72,000 criminals were executed. In the ten years between 1820 and 1830, there were executed in England alone 797 criminals. The place of execution in London (formerly generally at Tyburn) was in front of Newgate from 1783 to 1868, when an act was passed directing executions to take place within the walls of the prisons. >>>The dissection of the bodies of the executed persons was abolished in 1832<<< OMG. Here are a few examples. DIGBY, R 1606, 30 Jan Gunpowder plot conspirators, FELTON, John 1628 28 Nov Murder of Duke of Buckingham. DODD, Rev Dr 1777 27 Jun Found guilty of forging a bond, in the name of Lord Chesterfiled for 4200l MURPHY, Christian * 1789 18 Mar * (or BOWMAN) A woman; Strangled and burnt for coining FOSTER, George 1803 18 Jan Murder of wife and child;Old Bailey CAMPBELL, Major 1808 02 Oct Murder of Capt. BOUSFIELD, William 1856 31 Mar Murder of his wife and 3 children; old bailey CHARLTON, William 1862 15 Mar An engine driver: murdered JANE EMMERSON, to obtain the money she had saved for her funeral; Carlisle. COE, Robert 1866 12 Apr Murder of a young man for his wages,30s;Swansea. O'FARRELL 1868 21 Apr For attempting to assassinate the DUKE OF EDINBURGH; Sydney,N.S.Wales. OWEN,John or JONES 1870 08 Aug For murder of a family(7 persons) at Denham;Aylesbury. GOODALE, Robert 1885 30 Nov Murder of wife;(head severed through long drop); Norwich. THIS IS THE LINK IF YOU WANT TO TAKE A LOOK. http://www(.)fred(.)net/jefalvey/execute(.)html It is quite Disturbing to read these...Dont you think???? Lesley :~(

Very Lesley! I didn't realise so many were executed though and they certainly had some sadistic methods of doing it! Bev x

The Ego

The Ego Report 29 Sep 2005 10:23

In some of those cases they duly deserved it-shame the same isnt done now-make people think twice. murder of wife and child=no sympathy murder of man for his wages=no sympathy murder of a family of 7=no sympathy murder of a child=no sympathy some of the others seem a bit harsh eg. attempting to assasinate !!,and the forgery ones.

what a terrible punishment for that, and those poor women who were killed for killing their children would probably have been diagnosed with post natal depression nowadays and treated for it

I read an article in the Times Archive where a woman (girl - she was 17) was accused of killing her new born baby. She had buried the baby in the garden of the house at which she was a servant. The baby had bled to death at birth, and unbelievably, the poor girl was being blamed because she hadn't tied the cord properly!!! This was despite giving birth alone in an outhouse! Anyway, a doctor stuck up for her and she got off, but it makes you wonder how many other similar instances occurred. Bev x

Exactly Bev... Its amazing the info eg DNA they have now....what a shame they didnt have anything like it then....maybe many innocent people would not have been executed.... Although some of the names on the web page I mention had admitted Murder...so Case Closed.....or is it?...maybe their lives were so bad they thought it better to be dead????? Only they will know.....
