I've decided to do a bit of research on the 'Philips' family. They came from Checkley, Staffs and are rather well known around this area. Anyway, I have found them on the following census' 1861 - Hove, Sussex Capel Philips b 1832, Checkley. Landed Proprietor Esther Philips, wife, b 1834, Ireland Burton Philips, son, b 1859, London Frances Philips, daug, b 1860, Brighton, Sussex John Philips, son, b 1861, Checkley 1881 - Heath House, Checkley John Capel Philips, b 1832, Checkley, AJP Honourable Esther Fanny Philips, b 1834, Ireland Frances Margaret Philips, b 1859, Brighton, Sussex Bertha Mary Philips, b 1865, Checkley Capel Philips, b 1875, Checkley Also visitor, Nina Margaret Philips b 1859, Checkley (I have worked out her connection to the family but can't quite remember at the moment - daughter of John William Philips I think, him and John Capel are cousins....will check my notes! 1901 - Heath House, Checkley John Capel Philips, widower, aged 69 No children are with him in 1901, just servants. Can anyone find this family in 1871 or 1891 as I'm getting so fustrated now. Heath House by the way was built for John Burton Philips in 1836 (John Capel Philips father) The house is trully stunning and just down the road from me. Capel Philips jr by the way, I've found his birth registered in 1875 as Montague Capel Philips. Esther Philips died in 1881 aged 47yrs. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Cheers Helen x |

They were away from home in 1871 - only two servants in residence at Heath House, Checkley: Mary Francis 36 Housemaid Thomas Parker 17 Hall Boy Edward Down a married coachman was next door in the Lodge but no sign of his wife - perhaps she was a servant in the household and had travelled with the family. Wonder why they hadn't taken their own coachman with them? I suppose if they had gone abroad they wouldn't take the coach with them |

Thanks for having a look at this for me. Judith - thanks for having a look at Heath House in 1871 - at least now I know they weren't home! I thought about looking for the house myself but didn't know where to start - LOL! I think you're all probably right - maybe abroad somewhere. Maybe the head coachmen had the day off and others filled in!!! It's probably the same story in 1891 - would anyone be able to find Heath House easily enough? (cheeky I know!) I've just found the death of Montague Capel Philips in 1881 aged 5, the same year as his mother, what a shame. It goes to show you can still be absolutely loaded but still die from a disease. John Capel Philips & John William Philips shared the same grandfather so that makes them cousins. John William Philips also resided in a huge mansion, Heybridge, in Checkley. I have them missing in some census' as well, but again, likely abroad. Thanks for the input, I'm just off to fetch my little boy from school Helen x |

Gosh you're all so quick! Thanks so much Eunice! Like Tracy says, I never think to look at the Wales census........I'll have a look on my return from school. Thanks so much for the 1891 lookup. It's good to see one of them's at home - why she didn't come up when I've searched though - I've no idea. Thanks again, better go! |

There is a lot of early information about this family on Staffordshire Parish and Probate Records on Ancestry. There was a Heath House in the 1600's. |

I just googled 'Heath House, Checkley' and came up with a BBC website. It says that Heath House is in Upper Tean, nr Checkley, and was the venue for many films and TV programmes may be worth checking out... Karen |

Hi Eunice & Pamela, Thanks for the tip on Ancestry, I'll have a look later once my 3yr old is in bed. I tried to trace the family back on IGI (although I know its not always accurate) and found an entry in the 1600s or 1700s as ......Philips, of Heath House, Checkley. I poo pooed it as Heath House wasn't built until 1836. However, it sounds like the family had an earlier house named Heath House. Tracy, Thanks for that. No wonder I couldn't find her!!! You're a gem, cheers. Hi Karen, Yes you're right. I remember years ago a programme being on, all about the family etc. Absolutely gutted I paid no attention......but I wasn't hooked on genealogy then! Weddings now also take place there and I think it's still owned by a Philips. Heybridge was knocked down in the 60s I think. Thanks for the death Eunice, I have that in my notes. Have to go now as my little boy is screaming for some attention! Thanks again Helen x PS I only wish I was related to this lot! |
