1841 living Haughton, Lancashire Hill Thomas 35 Hill Ann 30 Hill Mary 15 Hill Benjamin 10 Hill Betty 7 Hill Esther 2 Transcribed as Hills in 1851 living Dukinfield, Lancashire, Esther is 13 and birthplace stated as Haughton. My great idea was to find her birth cert, even though Benjamin is my direct ancestor, as this will give me Ann's maiden name. I can't buy credits for 1837online as they don't accept my card but on Cheshire BMD there's a birth listed as Denton 1839. Perfect! No...her father isn't Thomas. I can't find anything else that fits, registration district on freebmd or ancestry bmd would either be Ashton under Lyne or Stockport. Can anyone see anything I'm missing? Thanks Lou

As a mere southerner, I'm no good on the geography. Did you get a cert, or are there details in an index? What was mother's name? Have you looked for all the Ester/Esther/Hester variants? Might Thomas be a middle name? Are we talking ag labs? Most likely, and the answer you don't want, is that she wasn't registered.

Hi Carol Thanks, that's the one I had checked. Father wasn't Thomas, mother isn't Ann. I ordered it from the local office who know me sooooooooo well now that I usually give them both names and occupation and they said that nothing matches and returned my cheque in full so I've not lost anything. Brenda Thomas was a Cotton Spinner. There's 3 children older than the eldest 2 on the 41 and I have all their baptisms, he gives his name as Thomas on all of them and on Ben's marriage cert. I guess she might not have been registered but was refusing to think about that cos that scuppers my plans! Lou

If her age is right on the 1841 census, I think this will be her birth reference:- June qtr. 1839, Ashton-under-Lyne, XX, 58. Kath. x

If the Ashton under Lyne one isn't correct, then the only other one around there is June qtr. 1939, Rochdale, XXI, 690 However, Haughton births should be registered in Ashton-under-Lyne. Kath. x

Hi Kathleen That's what I thought but they're telling me that her parents names don't match. Wondering now whether she wasn't even born to Thomas and Ann, maybe they raised her for someone else cos the 41 doesn't give relationships. There's a couple of other kids on the 51 with Thomas and Ann born inside civil reg but I only have the details from the index, not from the discs, so can't check if they are sons/daughters and where they were born. Thanks Lou

Thanks Carol Way out of my area but that's a huge helps cos....that means that either a) she wasn't registered b) she wasn't born to Thomas and Ann In which case I'm going to get the cert anyway cos I want to know who she WAS born to! So that leaves me with the other 2 children on the 51 with Thomas (Ann's actually deceased before the 51, haven't got her death cert yet but she died only a few months after the youngest child appears to have been born so possibly childbirth complications???). I'll have a poke around Cheshire bmd and see whether there are any possibles for these 2. I picked Esther cos she's got the more unusual name of the 3! Thanks everyone for your input/help Lou

The 1841 does not list relationships, so it is possible that Thomas and Ann were not the parents. The children could be nieces and nephews or just visitors. Found this on the IGI, may be of some help BENJAMIN HILL Male Event(s): Birth: 06 MAY 1829 Christening: 30 SEP 1832 Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire, England Parents: Father: JOHN Mother: MARY Source Information: Batch Number: 7127813 Sheet: 59 Source Call No.: 0538966 Type: Film

Hi Carol Benjamin's parents are definitely Thomas and Ann, I have his baptism record and those of his 3 sisters Mally, Esther and Elizabeth. I also have Benjamin and Mally's marriage certs stating Thomas as their father, I have them in 1851 and I have Thomas's death cert where Benjamin was the informant. I've managed to get the details from the 51 and the household comprises (the image says Hill, the index says Hills!): Thomas Hill HEAD Wid 46 Cotton Spinner b. Mottram, Lancashire Benjamin Hill SON Un 20 Cotton Spinner b. Haughton, Lancashire Elizabeth Hill DAUG Un 17 Cotton Weaver b. Haughton, Lancashire Joseph Hill SON S 10 Scholar b. Dukinfield, Lancashire Thomas Hill SON S 6 Scholar b. Dukinfield, Lancashire So....I've looked on Cheshire BMD and WAY too many Joseph Hill's to start guessing BUT there are 2 Thomas Hill's, one 1844 and the other 1845, one in Dukinfield and the other in Hartshead which is where Ashton under Lyne and Dukinfield meet. I've now send my poor dizzy cheque back to Tameside RO asking them if they can PLEASE check both these for a father called Thomas. They're normally pretty quick so I'll let you know the outcome. Thanks for ALL your help! Lou
