If the certification had been done correctly, the registrar would have asked her her maiden name and any previous married names. Her maiden name would be recorded as ''formerly'' and any previous married names as ''late'' So, had it said, Ellen Philbrick, late Smith, formerly Fitch, then you would know her maiden name was Fitch but she had been previously married to a Mr Smith. But as i said, she would not have been asked to prove any info given!! Merry

I have just thought because it say Formerly Fitch does that mean it is her maiden name or could she have been previously married just a thought???

You may have to accept that Florence maybe didn't die and that because of this and the difficulties of getting a divorce, it's possble Edwin and Ellen didn't marry as this would have been bigamy......... They would have easily have got away with this when registering any children. You didn't/don't have to prove you are married, to the registrar............. I have searched on Family Relatives 1901-1907 (fully transcribed) for Edwin/Ellen marriage and for Florence Philbrick death and there is nothing................ Merry

It's obvious that if Edwin and Florence are married in 1901 and 6 years later Edwin's wife (according to his son's birth cert) is Ellen, that Florence must have died between 1901 and 1907, and Edwin remarried. nell

Edwin Francis Philbrick b1907 Eton Bucks Father - Edwin Philbrick (insurance agent) Mother - Ellen Philbrick- formerly Fitch The marriage may not be on Freebmd. Have you gone through the GRO indexes, backwards from 1907? Have you looked for Edwin Philbrick on 1901? Is he married then and if so is his wife Ellen or Florence? Can you find either Ellen or Florence on 1901 with their former names? nell

my partner is trying to trace there family tree, and we have hit a hurdle already, and we are working from a birth certificate, i will write all the info down and hopefully some can assist as you are all much more experienced than us. Edwin Francis Philbrick b1907 Eton Bucks Father - Edwin Philbrick (insurance agent) Mother - Ellen Philbrick- formerly Fitch now this is where the problem is i cant find an marriage of the parents but i have however found that the father had another wife called Florence Baker, i am not sure if this was his first or second wife. We are just getting nowhere with his, perhaps you might be able to work it out for us as our brains are numb through thinging about this problem. Please help. thank you
