Thank's Merry, yesterday i tried forever to find it and couldn't. Tried again today, first realised it was changing to 1861, then when i finally got it it was just sample pages so will have to wait till it comes on propper. Thanks for your census search advice will have a look at that. Best wishes Gill

Oh yes, i remember now......it was because you said she married just after the census in Bucknall Staffs. So I thought she should have been nearby just before......... I used my almost-patented method of finding what place Buchnall was listed under, as it wasn't recorded as a parish in it's own right (I had never heard of it before, so please excuse my ignorance!!). Turned out to be recorded under Stoke on Trent (I think - from memory!). For my nearly-patented method, see thread called ''An Ancestry Census Search Tip'' - Am nugding it for you! Merry

Thanks everyone and Sylvie especially! If the common term was ''springside boots'' then no wonder The Times reversed the wording - they wouldn't want anything common in their paper, would they?? These boots must have been sensibly priced as only the posh ladies were wearing button boots. Lou - I shall send you a cyber pair with sheepskin linings - that should see you through........... As for the poor people who died in this disaster, sinking of the steamer ''Princess Alice'' 3th Sept 1878........if anyone has a rellie registered in Q4 (NOT Q3 - took a while for the inquests etc) of 1878 at Woolwich District, then they might have been caught up in the accident. If anyone needs a look up, just shout. Merry

Hi Monty I think you willfind that the common term was springside boots- now know as Dealer boots. Simply ankle boots that are easy to pull on as they have a webbing (or elastic) at each side = side spring or spring side And you can still buy them today but they cost a bit more than a £1. They are similar to horse riding boots. Hope this helps Sylvie b

Hi Weren't they the shoe/boots that the victorians wore where there were buttons up the right side of the ankle ie you put your foot in them from the side. Little Lil

I think they were the same as elastic-sided boots.

If anyonw wants me to search the lists of dec'd I can do - they should be recorded in Q3 1878 of the GRO indexes too............ UPDATE - Q4 not Q3 - Inquests took a while. Merry

Sinking of the ''Princess Alice'' 3rd Sept 1878........This was previously the ''side spring boots'' thread, if anyone wonders about the first few replies!!!......................... I have been reading about a terrible disaster on the Thames in Sept 1878 when a pleasure cruiser was sunk with the loss of nearly 500 lives. There are lists of the dead in The Times newspaper. If anyone has a rellie registered as dec'd in Q4 1878 at Woolwich, I can look to see if they were lost in the accident. Most of the bodies were registered at Woolwich, though some were washed up elsewhere. PLEASE NOTE - Registrations were in Q4, not Q3 1878....... Not so ''Happy Hunting'' :o(( Merry x
