I have been searching for a birth ref for my 1x great grandfather for the last year – think I have finally found him, BUT – can’t read the ref SOB, SOB!!!!!!! Is there anyone out there who would be happy to have a look at the image for me – can email it. This is the second time in two days that I have finally found a ref that I’ve been looking for for ages and it then being unreadable!!! – think someone’s got it in for me! Alternatively his name is HENRY MILLER and the rest of the ref is June 1865, Newent, Vol 6a (Page number unreadable – think it could be 221 – but this comes us as ‘sorry no matches’ on FreeBMD) Many thanks in advance Trudy

It's the same on 1837. looks like 22? I would still order the certificate and just put a ? for the last number, but if you are ordering from the GRO still say that you have the full reference number, otherwise they will ask for the full date of birth. Kath. x

Just about to dive into 1837 but I see Kath's onto it already. By the way you're welcome for yesterday's look-up Regards J.

Thanks Kath How do I order from the GRO using a '?' in the ref - surely it will reject it won't it? Trudy

I think you can use a ?, although I'm not absolutely sure. You could always ring them first and ask, but don't order it on the phone or they'll charge you £8.50p Kath. x

Jude Report 12 Oct 2005 15:59

Just had a quick look anyway as there seems to be some ? as to what the final digit is, owing to the poor scan. It's unlikely to be a ? on the transcription, which means it's probably a 1 or a 7. Even the dim 7's in the same list have a piece of top horizontal showing and the gap between 2nd and last digit doesn't look big enough to hold the long horizontal stroke at the top of a 7. There is a smudge slightly down and to the left where the reverse downstroke would be if it was a 1. Unless you can supply a full birth date I would be inclined to go with yr instinct on yr post and read it as a 1. regards J.

I think they will still find the entry for you. I once ordered a certificate and put in the wrong page number by mistake. I realised within about ten minutes and rang them up to tell them and ask what I should do, and the lady on the phone said they would check the page number themselves anyway if they couldn't find the entry. After all it can only be one of ten numbers so not that many pages to check. Kath. x
